Hour-long interview with Sean Bean and Bernard Cornwell on Sharpe

Worth it for Sean Bean's Simmerson impression alone.

What is 'doubling' a foresail?

Hi,

Apologies if this isn't quite the right subreddit. I'm a historian and I'm working on a project, and have come across a nautical term that I don't know.

There's a group of pirates who were caught by surprise, and for some reason their foresail was on the beach, not the ship. There's a passage where they talk about their prisoners, that reads 'two of them were ordered to work on a foresail we had laid out on shore for doubling'.

What is doubling? And why would you need to do this to a foresail on land, rather than on the ship?

Edit: thank you for all the helpful replies! This is not my area of expertise, so I really appreciate your kindness and eagerness to decode a weird passage written by a pirate more than 400 years ago!

What are some of the best ghost signs (old advertising boards) from around the UK?

I love ghost signs - old (often Victorian) adverts and signs that haven't been taken down off buildings. I saw this spectacular one in Bradford yesterday, and was wondering if anyone also took snaps of them and had some classic ones to share.

A cruise around southern Japan

Just finished an incredible cruise around Japan visiting sites most people don't get to see. I really recommend getting out of Tokyo and visiting the more remote communities in the south, as there are astonishing hidden gems. The trip took in Honshu, Kyushu, Yakushima, and Shikoku. Just a tranquil, Incredible time with some amazing vibes.

Photos:

  1. Kurashiki, Honshu

  2. Miyajima island and its Shinto shrine, off Hiroshima

  3. Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine, Fukuoka, Kyushu

  4. Yakushima

  5. Pearl fishing near Uwajima, Shikoku

  6. Gardens at Uwajima

  7. Some weird cyborg heads at Osaka Airport

This was the first hour of a 12-and-a-half hour flight. There was no place to escape the barenaked toes that crept forward from behind, like a game of Quentin Tarantino whack-a-mole.

And so I am now in South Korea and very tired because of lack of sleep from toe creep. Because how do you sleep when you fear being poked by someone's nasty toe?

Hi Reddit, my name is Dr Kit Chapman, and my book The Age of Alchemy is out today in the UK. It's a global history of how chemistry began, and turned into the modern science we know today. My previous books have been on making superheavy elements, and how Formula 1 is using green technology.

I travel for my books, and this one took me to Guatemala, Thailand, Azerbaijan, Egypt and beyond. I have now been to 104 countries and countless more territories.

AMA!
