Gravity Brewing made the front page!

Gravity Brewing made the front page!

Thanks to all your comments to my post introducing my purchase of Gravity Brewing, as it got the attention of the reporter Julia King from the Daily Camera and made the front page!

I would say go buy a copy, but I already went to the neighboring 7-11s and bought them all :) Big thanks to Julia, who is clearly a Redditor, for making the process painless, writing a fun article, and including my favorite quote of the article from Scott, our Brewmaster, "I don't want to make junk" lol

Gravity Re-Launch Party Aug 8

Well, Matt and I wrapped up our first month owning Gravity and boy, what a ride. More on that in a minute. To celebrate, we are having a low-key Re-Launch party this Saturday from 12-6 PM and would love more redditors :)

It doesn't stop here, of course, we have:

  • Aug 4, 5-8 PM - Book signing for "Practice Makes Culture" with author Ronica Roth
  • Aug 5, 6:30-8 PM - Geeks Who Drink Trivia, free to play, lots of prizes, ton of fun
  • Aug 6, 5-7 PM - Pints in the Park promo night with the Louisville Chamber ping-pong game. Win tickets to Pints in the Park!
  • Aug 7, 6-9 PM - Bike Night with all two wheels welcome - motorcycle, e-bike, human-powered style. Park here, show off your wheels, swing by the Street Faire or hang with us
  • Aug 8, 12-6 PM - Aforementioned Re-Launch Party featuring a ribbon cutting complete with oversized scissors that actually cut!

... and that's just this week! Other events I'm contemplating are Magic the Gathering night, board game night, dart league, vinyl party, mobile Sauna/cold soak, more Dungeons and Dragons nights (next one is Aug 25), and who knows what else. I'd love to hear from you - what would be interesting?

Just because I don't believe in promoting only, for the curious, here are a few lessons I learned this month owning a brewery:

  1. Systems, systems, systems. It is one thing to do something like clean a space once, but immediately the next questions you should ask yourself is, "How does this get done the next time?" and "How does this survive without me?"
  2. I really bought three businesses in one - manufacturing, wholesaling, and retail. Each have their own quirks, metrics, processes, and next actions. While there is tremendous value in owning the vertical, you still need to understand each layer.
  3. You really are doing all sorts of jobs that you wouldn't hire even yourself for. Ideally, I'd have a full time marketing person, a full time CFO, full time tap room manager, etc, but being a small business, sometimes you just have to be humble, do your best, and make it work. Trust in the value of layer integration, e.g. realize x sells in the tap room, talk to a few restaurants to test, work with the brewer the next day.
  4. How satisfying is it to hear a full taproom full of laughter and joy. A few weeks ago now we had our first Battles and Brews, a dungeons and dragons group in here and listening to 30+ folks over 6 tables go on virtual adventures, celebrate victories and meet new friends was immensely satisfying to me as a software guy who's previous idea of observing customer interaction was watching server logs :)

I bought Louisville's oldest brewery, Gravity Brewing

When I moved to Louisville from Sydney, Australia in 2012, I was excited to find not only a fun, walkable town, but one with a brewery coming later that year! Craft beer was just getting going and as someone who graduated from Chico State (home of Sierra Nevada), I was ecstatic to be able to drink craft, tasty, local beer again.

Fast forward to last year, I've been going to Gravity every Tuesday. I learned early on that my marriage was better if I got a day, and she got a day. My day was Tuesday and my place was Gravity. Just hit 23 years married last week :)

The best part of Gravity was the regulars, folks who were there sometimes 7 days a week. You could always find someone to talk to about the sports game, motorcycles, or even just watch Cops or a silly show about aliens together. Then I got a curious email.

The owners reached out to some of us regulars about buying the business. Another regular, Matt, and I took them up on it and as of July 1st, our new company now owns Gravity Brewing. We feel like we've been thrown in the deep end with all the details of owning and operating a brewery, wholesaler, and taproom, but I'm having a blast! We get to take what we liked about Gravity and then pour fuel on that fire to take it to a new orbit (because Gravity, get it? Sorry, dad humor leaking out).

Anyway, when I've told people that I'm buying Gravity, the most common response I'd get is "Oh, I used to go there", so my followup is "What would bring you back?". So reddit, what's your response? What would get you to come back or visit Gravity for the first time?

Come by and say hi! I'll be there today and much of this weekend. Find the guy with the goofy mustache :)
