Can you tell me how to name characters?
Nice to meet you.
I’m Japanese. I’m using a translation tool.
In my creative work, I’d like to introduce a character with an English name.
I’m not very good at English, so I can’t come up with a good name on my own. If you’d be willing to help, I’d really appreciate it.
The world of my story is generally full of funny, comedic elements. However, it’s actually the kind of story where there’s a dark side lurking beneath the surface.
This character is a robot with a modified human body. Normally, he attends school as a regular high school student, but he’s clumsy and tends to break things like walls.
I’m drawing inspiration from the character “Nano Shinonome” from the manga *Nichijo*.
About the character:
He is an incredibly strong, modified robot with physically impossible strength. I envision him not as a cybernetic being, but more like a combat weapon. (But he lives a normal life!)
My friends and I tease him, but we also love him as a lovable, endearing character you can’t help but like. We affectionately call him by the nickname “Nun(ぬん).”
Don’t you think it would be romantic if a silly name like “Nun” turned out to be actually cool when revealed as a full name!?
“Nun” is an original character I created when I was in middle school. He's a very kind person.
So, following the example of “Nun,” I’m thinking of using “NUN” as the model number.
I plan to use the three initials: N, U, and N. I want to string together three English words that start with the letters N, U, and N, and use that as its official model number.
I personally like the word “null,” so I did some research on my own, but I haven’t had much luck.
At first, I thought “null unit node” sounded good, but later I found out that “null unit” can also be offensive slang, and “node” has cybernetic, internet-related connotations, which completely shattered my confidence in my English skills.
I’m having a really hard time coming up with a name that sounds good.
Ultimately, I’d love to come up with a name that’s easy to read and remember, like “Evangelion” or “Serial Experiments Lain.”
If you have any good suggestions—even just a single word—I’d really appreciate it if you could share them with me.
Since I’m Japanese, I probably should be using a Q&A site like Chiebukuro, but I personally decided that this is the kind of thing I should ask locals about, which is why I’m using this site. I apologize for my clumsy translation. Thank you very much for your help.
