Trying to start as a freelance graphic designer on fiverr or upwork is not worth it right now right?

I see shares are down for both of them and digital services like simple graphic design, routine copywriting, and entry-level programming are shrinking faster than expected as customers turn to generative AI instead of hiring freelancers. (calclistech . com)

Not only that but the amount of scams that flood my message box and fake clients on both of these platforms.

Anyone has other ways they freelance besides being a reference? Or are references the only thing that will work?
