Are these termites? Save my new shed in Victoria BC!
These little jerks came in on the skids Home Depot used to stack my order. When the wood was stacked outside, we kept finding loads of them when we'd turn boards over - all of a sudden there'd be 50 of them running in all directions. Their frass is dark (dark brown or black) and granular - see the first photo. Not sticky as far as I can tell. Finding them today after only last week spraying everything down with the only insecticide we have (BugBGone) has me worried.
The blended thorax/abdomen is what really makes me wonder. Now, I've seen the big 3/4” long termites that live on Vancouver Island and turn logs to paper and these definitely aren't them - no orange, much smaller (maybe 5-8mm - the 2nd and 3rd pictures are next to shingles, so hopefully the grit gives you an idea of size). But these do remind me of the little termites I've seen in Ontario and Nova Scotia. But not being from the Island I don't know.
Another possibility is that they're earwig nymphs. Is that the case? I just built this shed and did a really good job on it - help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!
