No dental insurance in Canada and just got quoted $340 for a cleaning and xrays, is this just what it costs now or am I getting played?

I've been putting off going to the dentist for almost two years because I lost my work coverage when I switched jobs. Finally bit the bullet last week and called around to a few places in my city to get an idea of pricing before booking.

First place quoted me $280 just for xrays.
Second place said $340 for a "new patient exam package" which apparently includes xrays, a cleaning, and a consultation.
Third place didn't even give me a number over the phone, just told me to "come in and we'll assess".

I'm not made of money here. I just want someone to clean my teeth and tell me if I have any cavities. That's it.

The thing that kills me is I actually looked into buying my own dental insurance and after doing the math it barely makes sense. The monthly premium plus the waiting periods for anything beyond a basic cleaning means I'd basically be paying to save maybe $50 twice a year. What's even the point?

Has anyone figured out a system for this? Do you just pay cash and negotiate? Are there clinics that are more straightforward about pricing than others? I've heard some places are way more reasonable if you're upfront about not having coverage.

Found a Dentist in Winnipeg recently that actually lists their services clearly and takes walk-ins, which felt refreshing compared to the runaround I've been getting, but I'm curious if that's rare or if I just haven't been looking in the right places.

Genuinely stressed about this. My tooth has been slightly sensitive for a month and I keep ignoring it, which I know is making it worse.

Who actually makes the best tennis chains online now?

I've been looking at tennis chains online and want to know which companies you think are the best right now.

There are so many stores selling them now that it's hard to know which ones are good quality and which are just overpriced marketing. I'm mainly looking for something solid that can be worn daily without feeling too flashy or cheap in person.

I've checked out a few different brands and recently looked through some tennis chains from Leon Diamons while comparing styles and pricing online. For people who already bought one, who do you think has the best mix of quality, price, and customer service and also curious if you went with lab diamonds or natural and whether you regretted buying online instead of locally?

Thank you in advance.

Are there any of Einstein's lesser known ideas that turned out to be completely wrong?

We often hear about Einstein's successes and his few well known mistakes like the cosmological constant. But I am curious about his lesser known ideas that ended up being incorrect. Did he have any hypotheses about physics that just did not pan out as we gathered more evidence? I am thinking beyond the famous blunders and more about the smaller theories or predictions he proposed that science has since left behind. What were those ideas and why did they fail to hold up against later data or experiments?

Outsourcing cuts has been getting annoying lately. The biggest issue is turnaround time, especially on smaller jobs where parts that should take an hour end up taking days.Been looking at CNC plasma tables from places like Macro Weld and the pricing honestly seems more realistic than expected. Still not sure if buying one makes sense for a smaller shop though. For the guys who bought their own setup, when did it actually start paying for itself?

Thank you.

We’re doing seasonal hiring, think 500+ warehouse roles in 6 weeks. Current ATS crashes every time we try to move people in bulk. I’m talking spinning wheel of death while candidates are literally waiting in a lobby.

What’s actually working for you? Need bulk actions, good mobile apply, and ideally not having to manually click 47 times per candidate.

update: we found Page Up talent acquisition software, it's pretty solid

So here’s a little cautionary tale for anyone about to get a home loan.

I’ve been with my bank for 12 years, figured they’d hook me up, right? Nope.

They offered me 6.25% on a mortgage, and at first I thought, “Eh, that doesn’t sound awful.”

But before signing, I did a little digging, checked out diff sites and chatted with a broker.

Turns out, I could get 5.85% from another lender. That’s just a 0.40% difference, but on $600k over 30 years? That’s more than $1,600 a year.. or close to $50k over the life of the loan, just for sticking with my “trusted” bank.

Their “best offer” was just the standard retail rate. Made me realize banks are just businesses, not your buddies. Anyone else did the numbers and found out their bank was low-key ripping them off? How much did you save by switching?

My dad is not an emotional guy. Like, ever. Stoic farm boy type. Never seen him cry at a funeral, wedding, birth, nothing.

Last night we watched a dumb animated movie about a dog. Nothing sad even happened. Just a dog being loyal. And I looked over and he was quietly wiping his eyes. Didn't say anything. Neither did I. Just let him have it.

I'm 32 years old and that's the first time I've ever seen my dad cry. Not because he was hiding it. Just because nothing ever got to him like that before.

Made me realize he's not made of stone. He just never had a dog movie apparently. Small win but I'm taking it.
