Hi All, got my first hardtail and hit some trails, good fun. Slightly strange question but how do you guys hold the handles?

My left I have thumb wrapped under and two fingers on brake, feels natural. No gear shifters on the left to get in the way.

My right the thumb has to either go awkwardly above the gear shifter or I just leave it on the shifter. Finger usually on shifter and not brake at all as it would be bad to accidentally pull on the front brake?
