NPD - MXR Textures Initial Impressionsa

NPD - MXR Textures Initial Impressionsa

Very impulsively purchased the MXR Textures and I've had it on my desk for the last day or so. There's not much information about this pedal at there, especially for bass players, so i figured I'd jot down my initial impressions and gripes.

First off, I am super impressed with the sounds that can be coaxed out of this pedal. There are many more parameters than just the 6 knobs and two buttons. Holding down each of the buttons on top enables those parameters. In lieu of that I wish they made the pedal bigger, as I have been finding myself reaching for them often, and it's kind of annoying.

The presets are good starting points. Each one showcases different modes and parameters, and some of them are directly serviceable for bass right out of the box, which is nice.

So far I've been focusing on creating wide-spectrum ambient pads with each of the modes and have come up with some really nice sounds. All the different parameters interact with each other in very cool ways. I've definitely only scratched the surface.

Now, for initial gripes. Since I'm old and that's what old people do.

  • The HPF/LPF is insanely sensitive. Definitely a pro/con, but I've found the effect gets entirely dialed out after about 50%
  • With enough tweaking, I've found myself in a spot where I'm not sure which secondary parameter is causing a particular issue. Dialing back the Overlap helps with this but not entirely. The upshot of this is that the parameter settings persist, so getting the pedal back to "baseline" is kind of a pain.
  • I have accidentally tweaked more than one knob when adjusting secondary parameters, leading to something very cool but leaving me totally unsure as to what i did to make it happen.
  • The pedal gets very warm, even when it's not engaged. This tracks for digital pedals, and I have many on my board (boss GT-1000 core, a couple source audio pedals), but this gets REALLY warm. I'm sure it's fine but it was a little surprising to notice.

EDIT: Didn't notice I typo'd the title till i posted it. Oh well..
