Relocating from Canada to NY (west) soon and just confirmed that I won't be able to import my car due to it lacking a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. So I’m planning to sell it in Canada and buy a car once I arrive in New York.

Questions:

What are your top picks for a pre-owned, reliable AWD Hybrid or EV that holds up well in Upstate/West NY winters (lake-effect snow, freezing temps, road salt)?

Any tips or gotchas for someone buying/registering a used/pre-owned car in NY for the first time (dealership fees, sales tax quirks, winter prep packages)?

$450 USD. Used X13 Gen 4 AMD, Ryzen 5 7540U, 32GB RAM,512GB SSD. Use case: Daily driver, general productivity, light multitasking, running opensuse with a win11 vm. I also considered X1 Nano Gen 1, earlier X13 AMD generations (Gen 2/3) for less $$.

1. Is $450 USD a solid/fair price for this thinkpad?
2. How does the chassis footprint, weight, and build of the Gen 4 compare to Gen 1 through Gen 3?
3. Any thermal issues, or battery life observations with the 7540U in this chassis compared to the X1 Nano?

I'll be taking a course that uses Xvast for their video lectures.

It was mentioned that it must be run on Windows PC or Mac. Now on Linux, would it be best to use a windows VM or just use a spare old laptop for Windows + Xvast?

I'm thinking of running openSUSE Tumbleweed.

I've always used my Canadian line for Canada/US calls and data during my visits to the US. Also, I've used Wise and cash for quick purchases.

Now, that I'm here long term, what'd you recommend for phone/data lines and a bank (checking and credit)?

US/Canada calls/texts would be great, but not required. 20gb of data per month should be enough.
