Large pit bull attacks young 18lb Golden puppy, causing $2k in vet work

doug has a pneumothorax. basically he has a contusion in his lungs, causing air to leak into his chest cavity. his heart isn’t laying where it’s supposed to be because of it. they are keeping him at least 48 hours. they have to get all the air out of his chest. they are giving him antibiotics, anti inflammatories, super strong pain medication, and i think oxygen? we are over $2,000 in vet bills already.

Rescuers scramble to locate the many dogs sent to Pittie Project PNW while utterly, blissfully failing to recognize that this is like the billionth time in just the past few years that rescuers have scrambled to find What Has Become Of (insert dog name here)????

The explosion of transport rescue has ended in this - thoughtless, reckless, self-indulgent people sending dogs thousands of miles across the country and across the world with zero accountability or follow-up. And rescuers and networkers viciously resist any suggestion that this is abusive and cruel and has to stop.

There is, of course, a FB page.

Pittie Project PNW (WA) busted for starving, filthy dogs

Ashley Nichole Georgia, Founder. Now charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty.

PPPNW exclusively took dogs from shelters, saying on their website:

Their FB is down, their Insta is gone, their adoption form is empty - but their Donate Now button is fully functional. Of course it is.

Monday, October 5 ,2026 - the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office investigates reports of neglected animals on a property on Russet Avenue. They find nearly 30 dogs there, some emaciated, some with sores and other signs of neglect. One of those signs was lack of access to water, which is typically one of the very few non-negotiables in cruelty cases. You can be found to be chaining 30 pit bulls to trees with buckets of chicken livers as food, but as long as some of those buckets contain rainwater, you pass inspection. Dehydration is not a nice thing.

Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter (TN) outed for a 2024 newscast promoting a long-term "volunteer favorite" dog, Floyd, who attacks the newscaster

https://preview.redd.it/o6hldqm5x9uh1.png?width=474&format=png&auto=webp&s=afa78d34f67003bd1a96c6557aad2ef1e6ff8a2c

Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter, Tennessee. Shannon Posada, Director.

Acquires a large mixed-breed dog they describe as a Doberman/husky mix in late 2023. By late summer 2024, they have repeatedly reduced his adoption fee to zero and he's been adopted out and failed the adoption twice, and has developed a record of aggression toward other pets. The shelter markets him as great with people, a wonderful dog. A local TV reporter who specializes in promoting rescue dogs does a promo for him and he attacks her, biting her in the face and arm. There's no injury; he bites but releases. The video vanishes.

The video surfaced in Fall 2026 and the reporter hastily blames herself for the bite and tries to spin the video as a teachable moment for stoopid humans like herself to not force good doggies to bite. It took some digging to find this shelter because the reporter, despite her assertion that the dog is totally fine and it was all her own fault, mysteriously does not mention the dog on her rescue-infested FB page, so I basically looked at every shelter she did mention in other contexts until I found Floyd. The posts end in October 2024. I have no idea what happened to Floyd.

November 2023 - the shelter FB introduces Floyd, 1.5yo "Doberman/husky mix" who "loves people" and "does well with some dogs."

January 2024 - the shelter FB posts about Floyd - he's sponsored (ie, free), "absolutely loves people" but "prefers to be the only dog as he is an attention seeker." Also, later in the month, another post "Meet the one and only Floyd! He loves to play ball and spend time with people! Floyd is one handsome boy and so photogenic! Floyd is looking for his forever home!"

June 2024 - FB post from shelter "How has this boy not Been adopted?? 2 yr old neutered Lab/Doberman mix. He is such a playful guy. Would be a great hiking partner or just your best friend. He does not like cats."

August 2024 - Meet Floyd our Dog of the Month! Floyd”s adoption fee has been sponsored! Come meet this sweet boy!

This fun loving fella is FLOYD He's the longest resident and featured DOG OF THE MONTH At the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter Help find FLOYD a home, this good boy has been at the shelter too long!

September 2024 - volunteer marketing on FB Had a great walk today at Sycamore Shoals with Floyd our longest resident (over 1 year now). Floyd is a large husky mix who is about 3 years old. Floyd was a little anxious in the car but quickly forgot his anxiety when the car door opened. He was so excited to say hello to everyone he passed. He even went in the water to cool off. He enjoyed putting his whole face in the water. Floyd is dog selective, however we passed several dogs on our walk and he just ignored them. He was just so happy to be out of his kennel. Please come meet Floyd and you will fall in love with his playful personality. He absolutely loves his toys! He seems to be good with kids too! No cats for Mr. Floyd!

October 2024 - FB post Floyd is still waiting for his forever home. Such a fun loving boy. 2-1/2 yr old neutered Doberman/Lab mix.

Miranda's Rescue back in business because bureacrats are stupid like that. Good news, he has agreed to no longer use the killin' barns where he shot some of the 700+ dogs that are missing from his facility

There are laws, there are politics and there is always someone who pops up in these situations saying earnestly "But legally..." Yes, I get it. He was out of business over 3 specific issues, he satisfied them and so he's open. The thing is, that's not the way it's supposed to work. The rescuer who literally dug up this entire scandal is on the right track by asking the state AG to dissolve the rescue. You don't let a suspected serial killer and his passport skip out of jail because he paid his parking ticket.

https://preview.redd.it/o0gcn18ogzrh1.png?width=784&format=png&auto=webp&s=4b9c8b39a62abbdff65a9b99601d7063297f89c9

The Humboldt County Planning and Building Department has lifted its suspension of the conditional use permit (CUP) for Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna, allowing the purported “no-kill rescue, adoption & sanctuary facility” to resume animal intakes and adoptions.

In early August, or thereabouts, the county suspended the organization’s permit over a handful of violations. These included expanding operations to unpermitted parcels, the presence of an unpermitted modular trailer on the premises and a dispute over the legality of euthanizing and burying animals onsite.

In an email sent early this afternoon, Planning and Building Director John Ford said, “Mr. Miranda addressed the three items that resulted in the suspension and the suspension was lifted.”

When the Outpost toured Miranda’s Rescue and interviewed Miranda roughly three weeks ago, Miranda said he had stopped using the northern parcel for rescue-related activities. That parcel includes two large barns, one of which was identified by the Sheriff’s Office as the location where dogs had been shot dead. Miranda also indicated that he was working on plans to bring the trailer into compliance.

Reached by phone earlier today, Miranda said the suspension was lifted “a few weeks” ago and confirmed that he has resumed animal intakes and adoptions.

“We’ve found great homes for animals, but I’m not taking in [the volume] I did before because it always backfires,” he said. “When people are desperate, they tell you what they want you to hear. Then when something happens [they say], ‘Oh, it was my favorite pet in the whole wide world.’ Then why did you get rid of it?!”

He did not say how the matter of onsite euthanasia and burial had been resolved. After the permit was suspended, Miranda’s attorney, Allison Jackson, sent a letter to Ford challenging his assertion that euthanasia and burial are prohibited per the terms of the permit. She argued that the project description’s ban on “euthanasia facilities” in the original permit does not mean that euthanasia is expressly prohibited and wrote, “Burial is permitted on any parcel in this county … and occurs daily.”

That’s not strictly true. Both the Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health and CalEPA guidelines prohibit animal burial near streams, rivers, ponds, saturated soils or within 100 to 150 feet of a domestic water well. Miranda’s Rescue, located next to the Eel River, is entirely within FEMA’s 100-year flood zone, according to the county’s Web GIS system.

When the Outpost tried to get clarification on this dispute earlier this month, Ford didn’t go into specifics, though, in an email sent Sept. 4 he wrote simply, “People can bury their animals on their property.”

An Outpost reader forwarded Ford’s emailed response to her own inquiry about how the permit violations were resolved. The email, which Ford sent around noon yesterday, reads:

>There were three violations resulting in the suspension.
>
>

Miranda remains at the focus of a multi-agency criminal investigation into allegations of animal abuse, fraud and theft. In June, investigators exhumed the remains of at least 123 dogs from a field on the Fortuna property. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office estimated that the majority of those dogs had been buried between January and April of this year, though Miranda says the timeline was longer.

In a sworn affidavit, Sheriff’s Sergeant Shane Steele said Miranda routinely charged between $450 and $1,000 or more per dog surrendered, and Detective Julian Aguilera testified that he believes Miranda routinely killed dogs to make room for more, thereby earning more money. Miranda denies those allegations, saying he only euthanized animals that were deemed too dangerous to be adopted.

An Oakland-based nonprofit, Rocket Dog Rescue, has filed a civil suit against Miranda, accusing him of animal cruelty and fraud. Local animal activist Jennifer Raymond — one of the two women who kickstarted the current criminal investigation by trespassing onto Miranda’s property to dig up eight dead dogs — has asked the California Attorney General’s Office to dissolve the nonprofit and appoint a receiver to assume care of the remaining animals onsite.

Miranda has not been charged criminally. Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal has urged the public to remain patient given the complexity and scope of the case, which is being investigated by local, state and federal agencies including the FBI, the California Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and more.

Note - In a comment to one of her posts about the dog, someone accuses her of misleading about the dog, saying a family member of hers brought the dog into her house. This is not really much different - feckless adults at loose ends frequently dump their inconvenient dogs, mostly pit bulls, off onto female family members and then vanish into prison, a different unfortunate woman's home or just into the wild blue yonder. It's not like having the dog originate with your nitwit little brother, bimbo sister or restless ex is some kind of life sentence to owning said dog. The shelter should be a resource for you too.

Good Tails Rescue (CA), Darbster Rescue (NH) and the entire nuthouse that is the Riverside County Department of Animal Services collab to ship a dog-killing shelter Shar-Pei/pit mix 2,500 miles from the scene of the crime. Now he's sweet and loves cats. #adoptdontshop!

Editing because I am a nitwit who forgot to include any of the marketing posts that mentioned the dog killing:

January 2026 - a 58lb dog, said to be a Shar-Pei mix, enters the Coachella Valley Animal Campus (CVAC). He is given the number A1897400 and placed into the shelter's Ironwood prison training program. He does well there and eventually adopted out.

Unknown timeframe - Ronald is returned to the CVAC after attacking and killing his adopter's small dog. He is placed in a kennel with another medium/large dog and does playgroup alone. At some point he is transferred to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter. Both shelters are run by operated by Riverside County Department of Animal Services, whose director is Mary Martin.

Late summer 2026 - Ronald is scheduled for euthanasia unless pulled by rescue. The networkers market him aggressively, usually without mention of precisely why he failed his adoption.

September 2, 2026 - two rescue groups, Darbster Rescue and Good Tails Rescue, collaborate to pull Ronald from the Riverside shelter.

September 4, 2026 - Good Tails Rescue posts about the pull, crediting a networker named Ross, a transporter named Daniel and a foster named Kim. And when they say "transport" they mean transport - Ronald is promptly shipped from California to New Hampshire.

September 20, 2026 - Darbster Rescue announces the arrival of Ronald, who's available for adoption now. They describe him as a handsome 2-year-old mixed breed boy who is sweet, playful, and more than ready to find his forever family!... This lovable guy has a fun-loving personality and is always ready for his next adventure.

September 23, 2026 - Darbster Rescue posts a video of Ronald being introduced, through a crate's bars, to a kitten, with the heading "Ronald is a 2 year old boy who who just came to us recently and is very sweet with cats!"

Coachella Valley Animal Campus (CVAC) operated by Riverside County Department of Animal Services, Director is Mary Martin

Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter operated by Riverside County Department of Animal Control, Director is Mary Martin

Good Tails Rescue - founder Cynthia Jane Kim, founded 2024

Darbster Rescue - Executive Director, Ellen Quinlan, President is Victor Figuerdo

Martin was hired in 2025. The press release at the time read in part:

“Mary has a long professional experience in the field of animal welfare, including a proven track record of reaching a 90% live release rate at large shelters,” said Riverside County Board Chair and Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “She has developed pet support programs to help keep pets with their owners, sought adoption techniques that find pets new homes, and brings a collaborative spirit to working with the community to find solutions to shared issues and concerns. I want to thank Dr. Gary Weitzman from San Diego for participating in this selection.” In her role as RCDAS Director, Martin will lead a department with a $34 million budget that operates four municipal shelters. Last year, the department received more than 40,000 calls for field service, worked with partners to save more than 20,600 animals, and performed more than 14,000 spay and neuter surgeries.

The bold is mine - Weitzman is the $500k head of San Diego Humane Society who became infamous in 2023 when his organization sent 300 small pets (guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and hamsters) to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona for rehoming and the animals ended up sent to a reptile farm as food. An investigation in 2024 lead to a most unflattering characterization as recounted in the Animal Politics substack:

A 2024-25 San Diego County Grand Jury report, released just weeks ago, found that SDHS routinely failed to meet its contractual obligations for animal control, including maintaining the minimum number of patrol officers required to cover more than 300 square miles, 70 miles of coastline, and 400 parks.

The Grand Jury documented a 90% drop in citations for leash-law violations and slow, inconsistent response times to service calls—sometimes stretching as long as 30 hours. The report concluded that SDHS’ reliance on education over enforcement, coupled with poor record-keeping and oversight, left public safety and contract compliance in question.

Darbster Rescue is a $2 million rescue.

Boerboel owner/pit defender joins others in demanding answers from ACCT about not releasing dogs to shock collar trainers, triggering a wave of interesting replies from both the shelter and others in rescue/shelter

The majority of the comments basically support ACCT, which is typical - their very lenient release policies mean most rescue groups are fans. The outlier groups want 100% release, which the mainstream groups appear to recognize would be to risk the whole game.

Boerboel owner and pit bull breeder advocate cut/pasted below, the heart of his "question" is -

I’ve seen claims in multiple forums that ACCT Philly sometimes refuses to transfer dogs to other shelters or rescues that are willing and equipped to work with them—particularly dogs with behavioral challenges, including Pit Bull-type dogs. The specific claim I’m hearing is that some transfers may be denied because certain rescues use training tools such as electronic collars, and that ACCT would rather retain the animal and potentially euthanize it than allow another organization to attempt rehabilitation using methods ACCT does not support.

Red flags - "pit bull-type dogs" is doublespeak intended to assert that pit bulls don't exist and are unable to be visually identified, "behavioral challenges" is more doublespeak that in this context means high aggressive behaviors and histories, "methods ACCT does not support" is the placing of an electric-shock collar around a dog's throat and electrocuting him into temporary submission. This man ends his post with the hash tag #stopanimalcruelty.

"How is this not a much bigger deal?" asks grieving owner of Gizmo, 12, after he's attacked and killed inside her yard and Erie PA animal control declines to seize the killer dogs

The poor owner gets a crash course in the reality of dog ownership today - the pet dog who would be dealt with strictly to code if he was running loose and chasing cats, is torn apart by someone's violent dog and the same officer who'd easily write that citation is instead sucking back and looking for any way to escape a dangerous dog investigation and seizure of the attackers. Many places have dog laws that would allow for seizure of attacking dogs, but attacking dogs are rarely seized.
There is usually a deep reluctance in animal control and police to apply any existing dangerous dog laws.

And as this owner says, it doesn't make sense. Dogs that pull off these sort of hyper-violent attacks are not safe dogs. They're not safe for other dogs and they're not safe with people. At the very least, they need to be secured until the situation is resolved and the owners are properly warned of their responsibility to keep them caged.

And the saddest part is how the "cruelty" side of animal control also refuses to seize the dogs or get involved. They also apply their responsibility narrowly - despite the obvious abuse inflicted upon Gizmo by a violent dog and a careless owner, they focus only on the fact that the violent dog's owner is no threat to that dog.

Update on the Bruce case out of Ventura County, Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center and a FB post for the ages from the adopter's family

A dog's death is agonizing for the owners, so I'm sorry for the adopters. And they're in no position to make good decisions for their giant dog who bites readily when stressed. VCAS did the right thing.

https://preview.redd.it/asf2yvdtusoh1.png?width=595&format=png&auto=webp&s=83579701c7b87826aae569132d252fc98d1f64be

And the always useful Nathan Winograd weighs in

https://preview.redd.it/trbwf1lvvsoh1.png?width=818&format=png&auto=webp&s=77f1ef7ea8b5df34a612e4ce3672eb662151a941

Bruce is dead.

On August 12, Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) ended his life — just as his rescuers and legal team were actively seeking emergency relief from the United States Supreme Court. Only a day earlier, after a federal court lifted its protective order and the Ninth Circuit denied an appeal, VCAS informed counsel of its intent to proceed with Bruce’s execution.

let's skip ahead, as Winograd is a bloviater of the first water.

While VCAS relied on those bites to classify him as dangerous — arguing that “the physical and emotional impacts of those incidents” should not be “lost in the public discussion” — SPARC did not ask the government to ignore Bruce’s history. Instead, they offered a practical solution designed to address it: transferring Bruce to a sanctuary. VCAS, however, rejected it out of hand.

In doing so, government officials appeared to lose sight of the critical distinction between public safety as the objective and killing as the means. In other words, public safety is not an excuse to reject less destructive ways of achieving it. A dog can have a dangerous past and still live safely within a facility built to manage that past. Acknowledging this doesn't require pretending Bruce was harmless. But VCAS officials cannot pretend that a secure sanctuary option didn't fundamentally alter the equation.

What also appeared lost in the rush to kill Bruce — before all appeals were exhausted and non-lethal alternatives were considered at the highest levels of government — was his behavior during his six months in custody. VCAS’s own records described Bruce as a “model citizen.” He bonded with kennel staff, adapted well to a stable environment, ate treats from handlers’ hands, and recorded “no documented bite, attempted bite, charge, lunge, snap, or aggressive handling incident.”

That evidence did not erase what had happened before. It did, however, provide information about what was possible under controlled conditions. The issue, therefore, is not merely that a dog with a troubled history died; tragic and heartbreaking though that is. It is that the government was handed a viable alternative that protected human safety while preserving Bruce’s life, and chose to ignore it.

It goes on, but this is the gist of it. It never fails to amaze me that Winograd always carries on as if the past 20 years of shelter/rescue history have not happened. He's perennially in 1999, looking brightly toward a future where all animals can live out their natural lives in good surroundings regardless of their behavior. It's been tried, Nate, and the disaster surrounds us. Most of the ones who paid for that effort were animals. It seems like a real animal lover would notice that.

Throwaway Dogs Project founder markets a bite-history "Catahoula/GSD mix" for potential adoption as a trained search and rescue dog; another S&R person objects strongly, trainer says it's okay, he's gonna assess the dog

While I'm very happy that legit search dogs exist, there is a population of less-than-legit people drawn to search dog work. Can I really assess this rescuer and this trainer? No, I have no idea how legit they are. But the fact they were both marketing a dog without knowing a crucial bit of info about him, without (apparently) even meeting him, is a really bad sign. And the commenter is correct, they were marketing him as a search dog.

September 7, 2026, 12pm - a trainer posts this marketing for a dog on FB.

September 7, 2026 - a comment on the rescue founder's FB post comes out very strong against marketing the dog as a search dog, saying he failed a search team for aggression toward people. The rescue asks the trainer about it, trainer says he spoke with the commenter and with the owners again, and oops, he's going to do an assessment tomorrow.

OC Animal Care Center Tustin and Angels for Animals getting slammed on Instagram for networking a retiree's 16yo strayed cat into a rescue and refusing to help the owner get their pet back

A retired teacher takes a 1-week trip out of town, leaving her 16yo cat in her home with her husband and son. The cat, bonded to owner, typically hides in misery when the owner is away, so the men don't realize that the cat, this time, has slipped outside. The indoor-only cat falls off a wall into a neighbor's yard and can't jump back. Neighbor doesn't realize the (again, indoor-only) cat belongs to a house nearby and takes her to the shelter.

Shelter assesses the elderly, skinny and dehydrated strayed housecat as a neglected and abandoned 7yo stray and flips her to a rescue group. Owner is told no we can't tell you which rescue group. Owner points out she has photos of the cat dating back years, with her family, as proof the cat is hers. Shelter and networkers point out that *a rescue* has the cat now and ya know, she could have been euthanized if the rescue hadn't stepped up so maybe a little appreciation here? Owner bafflingly continues to persist in wanting her cat back.

The cat is skinny and her kidneys are messed up. The possible reasons:

- she's 16 so skinny might be age-related muscle loss

- she's 16 so weight loss and kidney function issues could be some underlying disorder

- both of which could be exacerbated by being lost in late summer California in the heat

- and all of which could be exacerbated by being an indoor-only cat overwhelmed by being outdoors and unable to catch her own food.

- or the owners were neglectful beasts who never noticed their kitty getting skinny and never took her to the vet and never fed her

K9 Advocacy Manitoba, Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation, and the brutal death of Amanda Nobiss

A rescue sends an experienced rescuer onto a reservation to pick up puppies. She goes to the home, nobody's there, the homeowner's loose dogs attack and kill her.

The rescue community is making the entire story about the problem of overpopulation on the reservations. Which is, of course, an issue. A few more special people are making it about colonization and the murder of the land's indigenous canines and replacement with Western dogs at some point in history, so that's helpful. What nobody seems to have noticed is the familiar but insane habit rescue has of sending their people - virtually always women - alone into potentially deadly situations to save animals.

https://preview.redd.it/5icwhe6r3smh1.png?width=753&format=png&auto=webp&s=460c528a1283f2ca6e124e13e4563d84c1031608

AN autopsy has confirmed an animal rescue volunteer died of a dog attack on Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation earlier this month, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service says.

Amanda Nobiss, a 37-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was found dead in Sandy Bay on July 17 after police were contacted by a friend trying to locate her.

She often visited the community 180 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg to save animals.

The police service said Tuesday that an autopsy confirmed her "injuries were consistent with a dog attack."

"We extend our condolences to Amanda's family and loved ones," the police service said in a statement.

Nobiss had been in Sandy Bay to pick up several puppies from a local resident on behalf of K9 Advocacy Manitoba on the day before she was found, police said.

They believe she went to the home alone when the resident was not there and came across the resident's "protective and aggressive" dogs.

Her friend then called police at about 1 a.m. and officers searched the area where her cellphone's location last pinged.

A community maintenance worker found Nobiss's remains later that morning outside the resident's home.

Band leadership and the police service arranged to put down two male dogs. The rescue group took in a female dog and several puppies.

K9 Advocacy Manitoba, along with the Winnipeg Humane Society and more than a dozen other animal rescues and organizations, issued a plea Tuesday calling on all levels of government to provide funding to address animal overpopulation, community safety and a "severe lack" of accessible veterinary care in First Nations.

"While our hearts break for Amanda's family, friends and the communities she's impacted, our grief is matched by deep frustration," reads the statement from the organizations, calling the issue a provincial public-health crisis.

The groups are asking for an "immediate roundtable meeting" with the participation of the federal and provincial governments, Manitoba rescue groups and First Nations leadership, ahead of creating an advisory committee consisting of communities and First Nations governments, veterinary experts and rescue organizations.

The organizations say communities should be supported with more access to veterinary care, spay and neuter services, pet food, education and other resources, but that lasting solutions will be led and developed by the communities and First Nations leaders.

DeKalb County Animal Services aka Lifeline Animal Project networker attacking shelter employee who told the truth about risky pit bull Sledgrass instead of being "extraordinarily careful with the words we choose" ie lying

Long story short, a shelter employee makes a FB post about a euthanasia-bound dog. She admits the dog is unfriendly to new people, is stiff all the time around people and other dogs, would need a childless home that is prepared to own a powerful dog that has strict "boundaries."

The dog does not get adopted, and is euthanized.

A networker posts an encyclopedia blaming the employee for the post.

The comments divide between saying okay but you can't lie to people and saying that the shelter employee is a self-important monster who killed the poor dog.

OC Animal Care (California) and the refusal of rescue to believe owners - releases 82lb goldendoodle to rescue partner despite owner-reported history of 12 bites, 2 months after euthanizing a 52lb pit bull for aggressive displays in shelter

To be clear, I think both dogs needed to be euthanized. But while I'm sure every pit bull fan would look at this different outcome and say it was anti-pit bias, I think the issue here is the end product of decades of blaming and discrediting owners for every problem dog. The rescuers simply discount every single thing an owner says. So Moose, reported to repeatedly attack people under the same situation - the person walking away, not a scenario you'd think someone would invent if they were simply misleading the shelter staff - is flipped to whatever rescue was crazy/vapid/soulless enough to want him, while Goblin, who repeatedly displays aggression in the shelter, is euthanized fairly rapidly.

When approached by clinic gave wary eye, nervous, frozen, stared. Muzzled, was good for vaccines then got nervous and started thrashing after vaccines were given. Walked to B1, no issues putting in kennel and was able to take leash off. Put Quarantine signs in front and back of kennel.

08/21/26 08:03 Dog presents as curious/affiliative in kennel. Takes treats nicely. Due to amount of unprovoked bites and behavioral history, unsafe to remove from kennel.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY Moose was owner surrendered with an extensive and concerning bite history, with his previous owner reporting bites to more than 12 people over the course of 3 years. Multiple incidents were described as occurring with little to no provocation, including people walking past him, turning around near him, or getting up after interacting with him. Reported injuries have included puncture wounds, skin break through clothing, lacerations, and bruising. While Moose has displayed affiliative behaviors in kennel, these observations do not negate the severity or unpredictability of his behavior history. Due to concerns for staff and public safety, we are recommending placement with rescue.

05/24/25 16:26 Went to move to bldg 5. Walked to visiting yard. As volunteer walked by bldg 3 with a dog on leash, G fixated and sprinted toward the gate, slamming into it and barking/growling, even though the dog was at least 15+ feet away from the visiting yard. Called out to him and walked towards him to have him disengage and attempt to redirect attention with treats/toy. Turned towards me and ran at me full speed, then jumped and kept paws on me and stared directly at me, pupils dilated. Did not react or engage with him. He soon dropped and sniffed around yard. Highly fixated on balls in the yard as well. When I would attempt to pet him, he would stop wagging tail. After petting, he would begin wagging again. Introduced to Sgt. on the way back to bldg 1. Did not engage, then when he called him over he walked over and pressed his side against Sgt, leaning against him and stepping on feet. Dog seemed to have difficulty breathing even though we had only been out for less than 10 minutes. Took to clinic, then placed back in bldg 1 and he began jumping on the kennel door. HIGHLY dog reactive. Will tug and lunge at dogs that are far away from him, fixates.

05/24/25 16:33 Overheats easily. Short walks only per clinic.

05/28/25 08:14 Took out, easy to leash. Walked to visiting yard due to previous clinic notes. Unleashed in yard. Immediately jumped up on me in a forward/playful way, then play bowed on top of my feet. Stared at my feet. Threw a treat to redirect attention to other movement. G dashed towards treat then began dashing towards other toys in the yard. Breathing hard after doing so--5 minutes elapsed since taking him out. Jumped again towards leash, I allowed it to drop to the ground. G hovered over it and snapped towards my hand when attempting to retrieve it. Redirected with a treat, able to grab leash but G quickly ran back and jumped up towards my leash. Able to place leash back on. G began fixating on leash and leash climbing, ran towards me but able to stiff arm and hold back as he made contact with only the leash. Placed back in kennel, no issues. Recommend rescue placement due to arousal issues and possible resource guarding.

5/28/25 He has a lot of triggers and he is sensitive to those. When trigger is absorbed, Goblin displays over-threshold behaviors including redirected bites, dilated eyes, and erect body language. Once overstimulated, he does not have the ability to go back under his threshold for reaction and will take his arousal out on closest thing (handler, leash, arms, legs). The time between stimulus and reaction is minimal and he's not displaying bite inhibition with his redirected attempts. He can go out for walks, but introducing to strangers / adopters will be risky given his bite attempts (even if spawned from arousal v. offensive aggression).

5/29/25 Walked smaller bulldog mix by his kennel. He showed interest in the other dog but when in the kennel was not reactive, but got a little excited. Tester dog did not want to go all the way to the kennel door.

The poor tester dog.

80lb pit bull ordered euthanized for biting off part of a woman's nose in 2024, saved by appeal in 2026 (bite was April 6, 2024 in Michigan)

April 6, 2024 - 3yo, 80lb American Bulldog named Chance, owned by Pamela Wicking, attacks a guest to Wicking's home, biting her in the face and tearing off part of her nose.

A circuit court orders the dog euthanized, an appeals court reversed it recently.

In a recent decision, the Court of Appeals ruled that Chance – an 80-pound American bulldog – is a good boy who did nothing wrong.

More or less, at least for now.

The case, In re Chance (COA Docket No. 373223), concerned a dangerous animal complaint in which Chance’s owner, Pamela Wickings, appealed a circuit court’s order for Chance to be euthanized after he bit a guest in Wickings’ home on the nose.

At the time of the incident, Chance was 3 years old and had lived with Wickings for the entirety of his life.

The guest noticed that Chance had her shoe by him. She then got down onto the floor, put her face within six inches of Chance’s face and sternly scolded him in a loud voice. Chance then bit off a portion of her nose. It is disputed whether the guest was waving the shoe when Chance bit her.

At the district court hearing, the guest denied that she was holding the shoe while scolding Chance, but Wickings’ boyfriend and her granddaughter, who both live with Wickings and Chance, testified the guest was waving the shoe.

When the granddaughter was asked if it appeared the guest was going to hit Chance with the shoe, she said that the guest wouldn’t have hit Chance, “but it looked – it would trigger, you know what I’m saying? Like, it could look like it.”

The animal control officer for the Port Huron Police Department, where the incident took place, agreed that his report indicated that the guest admitted she got into Chance’s face, had the shoe in her hand and yelled at him. The guest also admitted she provoked the incident.

The animal control officer told the court that he would not personally recommend people get in the face of a dog they don’t own.

The district court ruled that Chance was subject to an order of euthanasia as a dangerous animal, and the guest did not provoke him and suffered a permanent and serious disfigurement. The circuit court affirmed the order and denied a motion for relief from judgment filed by Wickings regarding new photographs of the guest showing that she was no longer disfigured.

In her appeal, Wickings argued that the district court erred in its findings and decisions regarding provocations, including by failing to properly utilize an object reasonable-person standard.

In a published opinion, the Court of Appeals agreed. Judge Michael Riordan wrote that until now, the courts had yet to interpret or apply the definition of “provoke” in the Dangerous Animals Act.

The statute says an animal is not dangerous if it “bites or attacks a person who provokes or torments” it. Riordan wrote that the district court should have applied a wholly objective standard in determining whether the guest’s actions constituted provocation. The court instead had used subjective considerations.

The court reversed the circuit court’s order of affirmance and vacated the district court’s order. The case was remanded to the district court for further proceedings to conduct an objective analysis as to whether the guest’s actions constituted provocation.

Judge Michael Gadola and Judge Anica Letica signed the opinion.
