Before Gorillaz were a thing, Jamie was looking to publish a short strip comic similar to Peanuts called the 16's back in 1997. Sort of a missing link between Tank Girl and Gorillaz. It never got published and we got the Gorillaz characters instead.
So 2D went from Monkey to (monkey like) man and Murdoc used to be a lizard

Working in a fast food place as a teen, I can sort of relate to one of them
I keep seeing this brought up so I thought I would give my input
From Phase 2, 2D recieved a an odd email from Child Support Services UK following his time spent at the funfair down in Eastbourne. This claimed he has outstanding child support payments for at least 5 children. This isnt the only time this was mentioned, 2D reported that *some* parternity suites did not stick as he is a cartoon, therefore doesnt have DNA (although they all had his blue hair). My interpretation of this is that for real world women (non cartoon) , it is impossible to test him, you know because he is a drawing and all.
He isn't the only one, Murdoc has at least 5 adult children which he avoided paying any support for, and has £500,000 worth of support outstanding.
This is actually a dig at celebrity culture, specfically dads who have illegit kids and refuse to have any part in thier lives (it is more common then you think)
It is a running joke that 2D doesn't seem to know how to use a condom and may have ALOT of kids out there. It is so bad that Murdoc joked that 'he needs to be neutered'
Anyway, I am not trying to ruin the characters for anyone, I am just trying to explain the satire behind it. Either way, it does not actually make a difference to anything.

I also feel *some* elements of Gorillaz are not appropriate for kids and younger viewers. At least they would not understand the jokes/satire

I don't feel like Russel gets as much love on her compared with 2D and Murdoc. I love his voice, and I share his appreciation of hip hop music. I don't feel like his character was developed much after phase 2 however which is a shame.
Anyway, here are some facts
He moved to England from America after his friends were killed in a drive by shooting. The ghost of his friend Del The Funky Homosapien who was killed haunts him and appears in a few songs
He is/was into Taxidermy using animals that died of natural causes. Like road kill for example...
He has an appreciation of 'feminine' clothes and fashions
He is well educated, and during interviews offers eloquent insights into music. He also acts as the voice of reason for the band and often keeps 2D and Murdoc in line
He firecly defended 2D against Murdoc a couple of times, even breaking up a fight.
It is suggested that he beats up racist 'skinheads' in the early phases
