Opinions on getting a dot painting or rarrk-style tattoo as a non-Australian/non-aboriginal?

I am planning on getting my first tattoo in November with a friend and am planning on getting a simple fish on my arm (about 5cm, not that this part really matters) and am considering having it done in a dot-painting or rarrk style instead of just line work. Like others who have asked a similar question in this group, I am looking for confirmation that something like this wouldn’t be misconstrued as rude or something that I don’t really have permission to do as someone who is not Aboriginal, or even Australian, especially given that it will be permanent.

I appreciate any insight or thoughts!

How do I leave my host family lol

I (F26, USA) am currently staying with a host family in Australia and have wanted to leave since the second day I got here. That was at the end of June/beginning of July. However, I’ve stuck it out.

Problem 1: I live with a single father and his two daughters, he works a 4x4 FIFO schedule. When I first started and we chatted beforehand, I let him know I would need 10 days off in November because a friend from home was visiting me. It is my friends first time out of the country, and I will have been gone from home/abroad for 8 months at that point. He said this would be fine and that he’d be able to get the time off work to accommodate it. However, tonight he told me that he wouldn’t have any problems getting the first 4 days off, but that he doesn’t know if he’d be able to swing a second rotation on his roster. He asked if I would come back 3-4 days early (from a 10 day trip, so almost cutting it in half). Obviously I do not want to do this and do not plan on doing this LMFAO. my friend has already booked her flight and we have already booked our accommodation for those 10 days. My plans will not be changing.

Problem 2: I live with an easily angered man and it reminds me of living with my dad, who I had to go through years of therapy because of how he was to me growing up. This man is not by any means abusive, he is just short tempered and doesn’t know when to let something go. I’ve gotten used to it over the past 1.5-2 months but I get frustrated thinking about how I did not fly to the other side of the world just to go back to living with another anger man. I am 26, I spent YEARS waiting to move out of my parent’s house and yet I’ve found myself back in a similar situation. I have wanted to leave since I got here but have stuck it out because I have a job to get my 88 days here as part of my work and holiday visa.

I do not feel particular connection to this family, unfortunately. I want to leave, but all of this considered, am still planning on staying until my aforementioned trip in November for practical and respectful reasons. Additional and maybe unnecessary details is he is actively going through a divorce and will vent to me about his ex-wife, saying things like “I’ll get her psychiatric eval forms out from court sometime and let you read them.” And it just feels so icky and weird and I don’t like it. He demonizes their mother to me and the kids and I’m so put off by all of it.

I’m unsure how to get out of this situation, if I’m being so honest. I’m a people pleaser and I can tell that I’m fawning in the same way that I would with my dad as a kid/teenager, even though I don’t want to. It’s all so stupid, but I’m empathetic to his situation of being a single dad and needing childcare, especially with his work situation. However, I just cannot come back here. It’s a miracle I didn’t leave immediately, and by the grace of God and sheer determination I am planning on staying another 3 months. I’m worried about dealing with his moods and attitude following me telling him I’m leaving and him needing to find a replacement. The way that he talks about previous au pairs does not make me feel like it’s going to be a casual conversation.

Any advice or anecdotal responses are welcomed. I just don’t know how to say “I’m leaving and my last day will be November x.” Has anyone else gone through similar struggles of leaving?

Birthday Getaway Recommendations

I’m turning 27 in mid-September (YEESH!) and will be celebrating solo as I am not from the area and really don’t have friends. I digress.

I was thinking about going up to the Whitsundays or something like that, because I haven’t actually seen the GBR yet. I work with kids and am looking for a peaceful break for 3-4 days, but don’t have a ton of disposable income.

Can anyone recommend budget friendly places to stay in the Whitsundays area, or even if there’s other places that you’ve been in this general area that you have been able to relax, without dishing out an entire paycheck?

Any plus size travel backpackers out there get back and realize they lost weight?

Just looking to see if this was a “lifestyle change” or if I just wasn’t eating enough. I’m assuming a mix of both, but would love to know if anyone else has experienced weight loss when backpacking!

I just finished up three months between Australia and Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand and when I got back home, realized I (F26) had lost 40 pounds/18 kgs without realizing at all. So like 13 pounds/6 pounds per month.

It could just be a change in diet + increased physical activity from walking more. I am also from the USA and am even more interested in knowing if this is also a case of “I left the USA and immediately lost weight because I wasn’t eating terrible quality food”.

Just curious and wanting to know if this has happened to others!

General help & recs for Mackay needed!

Hi! I recently moved to Mackay and am not Australian, but was told I should try a few different things and go a few different places for good views, etc. I was hoping some of you all could recommend some places to go, where to find certain things/who does it best in town, etc.

Here’s what I’m looking for!

  1. I was told I should try a vanilla slice, which is apparently not a slice of vanilla cake lol. Where can I find a good vanilla slice in Mackay?

  2. Are the weekend markets good? Would love more info on these, if possible!

  3. Why are there so many roundabouts here oh my god. This one isn’t a question, just an observation.

  4. Good cafes? I like matcha more than coffee. If coffee, ideally somewhere with dairy alternatives (lack toast and intolerant 😔)

  5. I was told I could see whales migrating in some places! Any places that I should check out that you’ve had luck before? What is a good time of day for this?

  6. Where can I find a Dr. Pepper around here 🫩 this is probably a dead giveaway on where I’m from but, I’m down bad for a visit to the doctor.

  7. Any good places to go to make friends? What do people do around here for fun? I’m mid-twenties and have genuinely no friends here at all.

  8. Best beach? Not necessarily for getting in the water. I went to Blacks Beach two days ago and it was, and I cannot stress this enough, quite underwhelming. Certainly there’s better ones?!

  9. Any general recs on places to check out in Mackay is very much welcomed! Or, if there’s any classic Australian things I need to do or try that I can do in Mackay, I’d love to hear those too!

Job market in Mackay? Hospitality specifically!

I’m moving to Mackay late next week and curious what the job market looks like for hospitality jobs (restaurants/cafes/etc) - does it feel like fighting a losing battle when looking for jobs?

Also, how do people make friends in Mackay? Asking as a mid-20s girl who has 0 connections in Mackay.

Really anything I should know about the area, places to go, restaurants to try (although based off other posts, apparently there aren’t many good ones), etc. would all be welcomed!
