In Memory of Kutlu Adalı

Today, we remember Kutlu Adalı, the Turkish Cypriot journalist, writer, poet, and peace advocate who was assassinated on 6 July 1996 outside his home in Nicosia.

Adalı dedicated his life to defending democracy, freedom of expression, human rights, and peaceful coexistence in Cyprus. Through his journalism and writing, he spoke out against corruption, challenged those in power, and advocated for reconciliation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

In the months before his murder, Adalı investigated the armed raid on St. Barnabas Monastery and reported on allegations involving the "Civil Defence Organisation." He received threats for his work before being shot and killed.

Nearly three decades later, his murder remains unresolved. In 2005, the European Court of Human Rights found that Turkey had failed to carry out an effective investigation into his killing. Subsequent public allegations made in 2021 renewed attention to the case, but no one has been held accountable...

Tufan Erhürman ve Nikos Hristodulidis, bugün BM Genel Sekreteri'nin Kıbrıs Özel Temsilcisi Khassim Diagne'nin ikametgahında bir araya geldi.

EN Translation:

The Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodoulidis met today at the residence of Khassim Diagne, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus.

The one-on-one meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, was completed in a very positive atmosphere and through a productive dialogue.

According to a statement from the United Nations, the two sides held a comprehensive exchange of views on the peace process and the roadmap to be followed.

The leaders expressed their satisfaction with the UN Secretary-General’s strong commitment to the process and reached agreement on four key points.

According to the UN statement, the agreed points are as follows: civil society participation, religious practices, animal health, and economy and trade.

The leaders agreed on the establishment of an advisory body to ensure civil society participation in the process, the preparation of an initial six-month plan to regulate religious practices across the island, and coordinated action in combating foot-and-mouth disease.

They also decided to establish a subcommittee within the Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Affairs to address issues related to Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products.

The leaders concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to meet again in the near future.

Food labelling rules in the EU may soon change

Until now, all genetically modified (GM) food in the EU must be clearly labelled.

For more than twenty years, consumers across Europe have chosen to avoid GM food. In response, most supermarkets have decided not to stock it, and farmers do not see the benefit of growing GM crops.

The EU is considering new legislation that would exclude most GM plants from its GMO legislation.
The plants excluded from the safety rules in the future are those engineered with new techniques such as CRISPR-Cas – also called “gene editing techniques”. For these, Standard EU GMO requirements, such as safety checks, consumer labelling, or traceability, would no longer apply.

If current proposals are adopted, it could become impossible to know whether genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are present in our food.
This would take away a basic consumer right: the right to know what we eat. Our freedom of choice is at stake.

Would be great if we can reach out to our MEPs to vote against it.
