What do you think of this itenerary for Central America (and anybody there at the same time)
Hello everybody, I’m planning a roughly 3 month trip through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico and am trying to make a plan, at first i thought it would be pretty open and on a whim but with doing more research the thing i wanna see does fill up the planning very fast. This is what i got till oaxaca and the dia de los muertos. After that I will fly to Merida to see Yucatan and a bit of Campeche. I will be travelling by bus mostly unless a shuttle is way more efficient and not super expensive like la fortuna/monteverde for example.
I’d love some advice on whether this route makes sense, what I might be missing, and where I should add/remove nights. I made this using info from tavel sites and youtube videos. I love wildlife, history, nature and don't care as much about beach or party towns.
Costa Rica september 8th till 30th
- Sep 8–9 San José: land in the evening and a day to get used to timezone and see a bit of the city.
- Sep 10–14 Drake Bay: Travel to Drake Bay on September 10. I already have a Corcovado overnight booked for September 12–13.
- Sep 15 San José: Travel back from Drake Bay since tortuguero is too long for one day
- Sep 16–19 Tortuguero.
- Sep 20–22 Puerto Viejo and Cahuita.
- Sep 23–25 La Fortuna.
- Sep 26–29 Monteverde.
- Sep 30 travel to San Juan del Sur.
Nicaragua september 30th till october 11th
- Sep 30–Oct 2 San Juan del Sur and see if there the turtles are laying eggs at La Flor to go there one day if they are.
- Oct 3–6 Ometepe.
- Oct 7–8 Granada.
- Oct 9–11 León: City + Cerro Negro.
- October 11th travel to El Salvador.
El Salvador october 11 till 19th
- Around Oct 11–13 Cerro Eramón, found this place and looks amazingly beautifull and not that popular.
- Oct 13–16 Santa Ana.
- Oct 16–19 Ruta de las Flores
- October 19th travel to Guatemala.
Guatemala october 19th till 27th
- Oct 19–21 Antigua.
- Oct 21–23 Acatenango.
- Oct 23–27 Lake Atitlán.
- October 27th trael to San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Mexico from october 27th
- Oct 28 San Cristóbal.
- Oct 29 travel to Oaxaca. read something about a night bus somewhere maybe?
- Oct 29th till November 5th in Oaxaca for dia de los muertos.
After Oaxaca, I’ll continue towards Yucatán and eventually fly home on November 26. I did not include FLores in Guatamale because I want to see the temples there and time before Oaxaca is somethat limited.
What I’d especially like advice on
- Does this route make sense in terms of timing and public transport?
- Are there places where I’m staying too long or not long enough? I spent a lot of time in Costa Rica now but the nature there also seems insanely gorgeous if I look at it.
- Am I missing any must-see places in Nicaragua, El Salvador or Guatemala? Somebody said Laguna de Apoyo is very nice for example. Would you advice to go there too and take a few days from costa rica?
- Any advice on where to take a shuttle instead of public transport? I think la fortuna to monteverde is worth it for one.
If you are in the area at the same time maybe we can meet and do an activity together
