Does destroying the world not invalidate everything that has happened so far?

I’m not deep into avatar but I’m an enjoyer of the original cartoon. I didn’t enjoy The legends of Korra and never truly watched it through. I also don’t look into the leaks and stuff but I have heard that the next avatar is placed in a world that has been destroyed. Now I understand it’s a cool idea. But it’s frustrating me because it feels like now everything that Aang and his friends had done is just now invalidated and really meant nothing. The original gang and all their accomplishments lasted only a few generations. Only one generation of an avatar. I really think that it has potential to be a cool plot, but not after all the love everyone has for the original series. It just destroys the whole purpose in my opinion. I understand production desires and a new setting and a reset a bit, but it just feels wrong.
What do you all think?
