A customer wanted a refund for pool admission today, and now even after my shift I still feel pretty bad, like I did something wrong.
So I work at a resort's pool as a summer job (I'm a college student), and one of the duties is doing pool admission. Today that was my job. This pool is mainly for resort guests, however it's pretty common for non-guests to show up. They can pay to get in.
Well, today there were two guys (late 40's I would say) that came in and bought admission ($20 total). I ring them up, they pay, everything's normal. Until about 15 minutes later when one guy comes up, says he is a guest at the lodge, and wants a refund. I call up my supervisor who says it's not possible. It's all chill at this point. Then maybe another 15 minutes later, the second guy comes up all pissed off that I can't give him the refund.
At first he says "Fine, then give me cash!" and I think it's a joke because it's 20 fucking dollars. Then I realize he's not joking and we have a brief argument. One thing I remember is that he said "So you can't do your job?" I just passively aggressively responded "Yep, sure is!" and I closed the booth window and called my supervisor. I wish I could have said something like "I'm not the dumbass who failed to tell me you were a resort guest," but I guess it's better I didn't say that so I didn't get fired.
I call up my supervisor, who shows up with HIS supervisor, and they get the whole thing taken. The asshole puckers away back to the pool with $20 back in his bank account, and I go back to my job. That's the end of it.
This was my first negative interaction with a customer since it's only the third week and this is my first job (I cannot wait to quit at the end of summer). But it's now a few hours after my shift and I still feel bad. I still have that sinking feeling and that fast heart rate. And my evening is ruined now.
How do you learn to let stuff like this go once you're off the clock? I keep telling myself "I don't get paid enough to care even while ON the clock" but that doesn't seem to be working at the moment
