Fiddling (verb)

Ok. Two months owning the thing. Three lessons in. I’ve got one song I can play decently well and one I’m… working on.

But I feel like I’m playing the violin, not the fiddle. I read the notes, I play the notes. What makes it fiddling and how/when do I learn that as opposed to playing violin?

Wish I’d taken a video!

35 days ago I picked up a violin for the first time. Yesterday I had my first lesson, which you fine folks convinced me I should take. I’d taught myself one scale and practiced it forward and back, which seemed to impress the teacher. She then showed me that had I bothered to check I’d have seen the other scales are the exact same thing, just starting on a different string. Lol. Then she gave me a cheat sheet for the first line of row row row your boat, and had me practice it, and a few other tunes to practice on my own.

Today had I had my first post lesson practice. Rocky start to Yankee Doodle, I tell ya. But my wife was able to recognize Mary had a little lamb, yankee doodle, and happy birthday from the other room. She was very impressed when she found out I had not even attempted those before.

I do wish I’d recorded this practice session just so I could document progress but I’ll try to record the next one.

Basically this was a lot of words to say y’all really encouraged me and I’m grateful for this subreddit! I still sound like a screeching cat at times, but a screeching cat with a modicum of rhythm and can carry a tune!

Also shout out to that one commenter on my first post who said it would be two years before I produced music that sounded better than silence. You were the biggest motivator of all! Lol

After the recent SCOTUS ruling

Washington state has an “assault weapon” ban that seems like it could be struck down similarly. Anyone know of a current or pending case that might give us an idea of a timeframe?

Edit: my mistake, it was not SCOTUS, it was 3rd circuit appeals court.

Starting at 43

Bought a violin and it arrived today! Took me over a half hour to tune the dang thing. Hoping that gets easier with practice! The digital tuner was no help but I found a great free app that helped a lot.

Sooo… I guess now I just practice form and start developing muscle memory? I’ve been wanting to learn an instrument my whole life and nothing has ever stuck but I’ve never been this determined before. I WILL be a fiddler. I’ll even go on the roof if I have to!

Edit to add: I’m looking for a teacher locally even if it’s just for a couple lessons because of expense. I’d like to avoid bad form problems! Thank you everyone!

Edit 2: I have a free consultation with a music teacher in a couple weeks and I’ll be getting a block of 4 lessons at a reasonable price! Thank you all so much for your encouragement and advice!

Tradwives or debateafeminist?

My (trad) wife does not like confrontation so she vents to me about things rather than bring them up here. I have no problem with confrontation so I’m gonna say it.

Is this a community for people of the trad persuasion or is it a place for single, bitter people to come and talk down to trad wives? It seems like every day there’s a feminist or some bitter old divorcee coming in to talk about why trad is bad and stupid and we are all stupid/abused/abusive.

Can the mod team chime in please? Why is this being tolerated? Should we all go to a working mom’s subreddit and tell them they’re doing it wrong? Or maybe the feminist subreddit to explain what’s wrong with their lifestyle. Oh yeah. They’ll delete the posts because it’s not appropriate.

There. I vented. Can we keep this a space for trad?
