How do you feel about current fitness trends? It seems like the industry is erasing the natural female figure and demonizing healthy body fat.
I want to preface this by saying I am absolutely not talking about clinically unhealthy levels of fat accumulation. Physical activity is crucial, and building muscle is a great thing. But lately, I can’t help but feel like the fitness industry has declared an all-out war on the normal, healthy subcutaneous fat layer—which is literally a vital endocrine organ.
Why is the industry pushing women so hard to strive toward an ultra-lean, highly muscular, and sometimes rigid or bulky physique?
It seems like in this over-obsession to build muscle and achieve single-digit body fat, we are erasing natural feminine traits. Subcutaneous fat is what gives a woman hips, breasts, and that normal underbelly softness. Instead, I’m seeing women who are pushed into looking almost "square." They lose their natural curves in favor of huge, hyper-developed thighs and glutes that, while impressive in a vacuum, often make the whole figure look weirdly disproportionate and completely unsustainable in everyday life.
You can even look at naturally thin women (like many traditional Asian body types)—even without much weight on them, they don't lose that fundamental feminine shape. But this modern fitness aesthetic of building massive lower bodies while stripping away all upper body and core fat just looks unnatural.
Where do we draw the line? Yes, some muscle adds beautifully to a physique, but when does healthy fitness cross over into erasing the natural female form?
And honestly, this isn't just an issue for women. The industry does something similar to men. I consider the hyper-bulky bodybuilder look—huge backs, massive biceps, and tree-trunk legs—far less attractive than a natural physique. Even on a man, a little bit of cushion doesn't make him less attractive; in fact, I think the lean, functional "calisthenics" physique is the best look by far.
Are we losing our grip on what a healthy, natural human body is actually supposed to look like? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
