The Punisher Reading Order, 1974-1990: Back to the War - Marvel Comics

This entry spotlights the Punisher’s earliest appearances alongside Spider-Man, before he branches out into other corners of the Marvel Universe; facing the likes of Daredevil, Moon Knight and even Doctor Doom. In the mid-80s, the Punisher was granted his own mini-series, which was quickly followed by his own ongoing titles. Before long, he had a second ongoing – Punisher War Journal – to meet demand!

The Kree-Skrull War II (1989) Reading Order - Silver Surfer

The centuries-spanning enmity between the Kree and the Skrulls may have come to an end, at least temporarily during the original Kree-Skrull War, but these two galactic empires will always be at odds with one another. Since that time, the Skrulls have lost their throneworld to the planet-devouring Galactus, before a power-obsessed Skrull cost them their shapeshifting abilities. Earth 2 Reading Order, 2012-Present: The New 52 & Beyond

The writing on the two main titles – Earth 2 and Worlds’ Finest – were handled by creative greats like Tom Taylor, James Robinson and George Perez, among others, the reins would be handed over to others for the climactic ‘World’s End’ event that pitted the Wonders of the World against Darkseid and his forces and didn’t show this corner of he multiverse as its best. However, the sequel to the main series – Earth 2: Society – would take the characters back to their New 52 roots for an interesting climax to the saga.

The Kree-Skrull War (1971-1972) Reading Order

‘The Kree-Skrull War’ has influenced a great number of later events in the Marvel Universe, most notably ‘Secret Invasion’. While it’s considered a classic, it’s very much a product of its time and can be a tough read for modern audiences. And those out-of-character Magneto Magneto appearances have to be seen to be believed…!

Hulk Reading Order, 1987-1992: The Peter David Era I - Marvel Comics

Now, I’ll admit, the initial issues aren’t necessarily the strongest. Peter picked up a number of Al Milgrom’s dangling plot threads after he left the title. But it starts moving in the right direction when the Hulk has his first rematch with Wolverine (as drawn by Todd McFarlane in Incredible Hulk #330-345). Jeff Purves provides the art when the Hulk becomes an enforcer in Las Vegas (#347-361) before Dale Keown hops on as regular artist (#367-398), ihelping Peter David redefine the Hulk and bring the series to a whole new level of incredible.

The New 52: Futures End (2014-2015) Reading Order - DC Comics

The event promised to bring future Batman(Terry McGinnis of Batman Beyond fame) into the mainstream DC Universe. Instead it brought him five years into the future of the DCU with a mission to prevent the sentient Brother Eye computer from taking control of Earth. While the Futures End timeline would ultimately be completely diverted (spoilers again!), the event’s true antagonist would go on to become a key-player in the next DC event… CONVERGENCE (2015) which would prove to be the true sequel to WORLD’S END (2014-2015). The fate of ‘Batman Beyond’ wasn’t quite what readers were hoping for, either.

Easily the stand-out series of the original 2099 titles, Spider-Man 2099 followed Miguel O’Hara through the future timeline where corrupt corporations make the rich richer and the poor poorer before a genuine super-villain takes control of the White House…

Here, you’ll be introduced to the mainstay post-Crisis support cast, including Lois Lane, Bibbo Bibbowski, Kat Grant, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White. You’ll also meet new incarnations of classic villains, like Metallo, Mister Mxyzptlk, Brainiac (sort of) and, of course, Lex Luthor, along with new villains such as Rampage, Bloodsport and the Silver Banshee. But it’s the introduction of Supergirl and General Zod that will pave the way to explaining the reason why there’s one line Superman won’t cross!
