Behçet and the autism spectrum

Medical literature seems to suggest that both Behçet syndrome and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are linked to gene variants stemming from Neanderthal introgression.

I also saw ASD mentioned in another thread here.

I have both a father and a son who can be considered as high functioning autistic with successful social adaptation strategies. My father also had MAGIC syndrome; my son thank God not. Myself, I might have some autistic traits, but nothing really serious.

Hence my inquisative question: Were you or any family members diagnosed with ASD?

EDIT: I forgot to mention my little niece who has more severe ASD and ADD, requiring home schooling.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome may mimic Behçet syndrome — The importance of genetic testing

As some may know, I offer patients help with interpreting their whole exome sequencing (WES VCF) results on a voluntary basis.

This is now the second time that I find a patient who originally was diagnosed with Behçet syndrome, but who happens to have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).

Both patients are female and of East-European descent. One has vascular type EDS, the latest case has classic type EDS.

EDS is caused by a pathogenic variant allele of a collagen encoding gen. Such variants are autosomal dominant, which means that a single variant allele is sufficient to suffer from this disease.

Both patients suffer from mouth and skin ulcers, abdominal pain/ulcers and chronic widespread pain. However, in both cases the skin is not obviously over-elastic.

This illustrates how genetic screening of Behçet diagnosed patients is important to rule out less outspoken cases of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Are mornings worse than afternoons and evenings?

My whole life I have had more autoinflammatory symptoms in the morning than in the afternoon or (late) evening.

Is this typical among the whole spectrum of autoinflammatory disorders?

How did/does it affect your employability?

The occasional botched Ilaris injection?

I am on my seventh monthly 150 mg canakinumab (Ilaris) now for my pathogenic V198M NLRP3 variant.

Ilaris usually does a great job in preventing Behçet vasculitis pain triggered by atmospheric pressure changes caused by wind gusts or air conditioning.

However, of these seven Ilaris injections, two felt like botched with no or little effect, including my last one.

Ilaris is after all a biological and the production process might not be equally successful despite its exorbitant price.

Hence, I am wondering: Has anybody else had the experience/impression of having received a botched Ilaris injection? Also, might it be injection site dependent? (In my case left or right abdomen.)

EDIT: I had a viral throat infection around the time of my last injection, so that might have had an influence too.

It will only get worse: Additional European handling fee starting November 2026

European Handling Fee Starting November 2026 As of November 1, 2026, a new European handling fee (also known as a "handling tax") will be introduced across the entire European Union, on packages from outside the EU. This fee is estimated at €2 to €3 per package and is intended to cover the administrative costs incurred by customs in processing the large volume of small shipments.

This measure replaces originally planned national fees that countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and France intended to introduce individually. The European approach prevents double taxation. For 2026 and 2027, Belgium is expected to retain the entire revenue from this handling fee to strengthen its own budget and customs controls. From 2028 onwards, the majority of this revenue will flow to the EU budget.

Weet iemand hier iets méér over? Hebben we collectief te maken met een afgezwakte covidvariant? Ik hoor het graag.

The immunostimulatory effect of menthol

Previously, I reported in this group that menthol and thymol ingestion caused severe ulceration of my skin.

A 2018 Spanish study confirmed the immunostimulatory effect of menthol in mice, but the effect is mouse strain dependent. A similar effect was previously reported by US-based researchers.

However, the same Spanish group later also reported that menthol inhalation can increase cognition by lowering IL-1β in wild-type mice and mice affected by Alzheimer.

Natural supplements that inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation

…based on scientific publications.

I have no conflict of interest nor any financial ties with any of the depicted product companies. I am only sharing in a responsible way what got me back on my feet. YMMV

  • licorice root tea (maximum 1 in the morning; it raises blood pressure.)
  • DGL licorice extract
  • isoliquiritigenin (Nootropics Depot)
  • MSM (start low, aim high; ≥ 3 g per day in the morning because it can cause vivid dreaming)
  • ubiquinol (100 - 200 mg first thing in the morning to prevent insomnia in the evening)
  • quercetin (1 g in the morning, 1 g in the evening)

Not shown: I also tried a feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) supplement because it contains parthenolide. However, I discontinued this, because it gave me headaches. This is weird, because feverfew is used as a prophylactic against migraine.

For me personally, the most effective are licorice root tea, MSM and ubiquinol.

Combined with monthly canakinumab (Ilaris) and avoiding all menthol, thymol and other Lamiaceae herbs, I entered in complete remission of Behçet syndrome. I do stress it is only the combination that works for me.

TLDR

Got a bad pair of KZ-ZS10 Pro 2s; looking for a different brand IEM with QDC connectors in the €50 or less category.

The whole story

I bought my first pair of IEMs from Aliexpress, KZ-ZS10 Pro 2, but I was very unlucky.

The sound volume in my right IEM happens to be significantly lower than that in my left IEM, skewing the soundstage to the left.

This is independent of the source, cable or DIP switch setting and I don't have a hearing problem. Obviously this is a testament to absent KZ quality checks.

Since, I have already invested in a better QDC cable, I am looking for a different brand IEM with QDC connectors in the €50 or less category. I am not a bass head, but light V-shaped or emphasis on male voice are OK with me.

Thank you for any suggestions with a small description.

EDIT

Willing to open my purse wider for a more mature, neutral sound with good male vocals.
