AES skills, Candy Cabs, and your NeoGeo start
NeoGeo start - My first intro to NeoGeo was MVS and seeing the AES at Babbages or Software Etc as a kid. I didn’t actually know the terms MVS or AES until I joined this sub. I never knew anyone fortunate enough to own an AES, and to this day I’ve never played one. What had me circle around to NeoGeo was the ACA ports I started buying on the cheap for Switch a couple of years back. Once I found out about Garou, I found this sub. (The Switch has been a great place to play NeoGeo games) I have a few ports on Steam too, and that is where I use my arcade stick, but most of my time playing NeoGeo ports is on Switch 2. Of course I cannot wait for the AES+ so I can get an idea of what playing NeoGeo has been like for those of you that grew up collecting.
AES Skills - Those of you that can repair broken AES consoles, how did you learn? It’s interesting to me
MVS Candy Cab would be my choice if I could ever own a MVS arcade cabinet. I just like the aesthetic
Anyhow, please share if you want to
This game is just so good, yet so punishing👊
The music, the graphics, the backgrounds, Fatal Fury 3 delivers. Such a fun game to play, but I’m not fantastic at it so the CPU regularly sends me flying. I need a good tutorial for this one. I’ve owned the ACA port of this game for years, but hadn’t really sat down, and spent time with it.
All the sprites
Hardware and Software future. I don’t know enough about hardware to say what would be current tech requirements to be the top dog at running 2D sprite games with zero consideration for 3D graphics. No 3D at all.
Hardware - What would the build of a new NeoGeo that stuck to the OG tradition of 2D sprite games require? (or does the AES/MVS already max out 2D sprite potential?) Back when the AES was first made, there were things it would do better than everyone else in the 2D game space, but they were not competing to develop the same type or style of games as the others at the time. Would a new 2D sprite based hardware beast be able to do anything that a current gen console or PC couldn’t already do? (I don’t know if the architecture differs in capability, or if the common graphics cards/chips of today are really just all-around masters, regardless of the graphical style.)
Software - In a new NeoGeo game library, would you want the games to be strictly arcade style in size, or would you want to be able to play longer style games as well (like a long wordy 2D rpg)?
Would you want a next NeoGeo at all?
(I imagine this topic has been discussed before, I hope discussing it now is cool with the rest of you)
NeoGeo games my wife will play with me
My wife is not really a video game person, but she will play a co-op game with me if I find something good (usually that would be a Bomberman game). Today she tried out Zupapa and Big Tournament Golf with me. She likes both games! Zupapa for arcade fun, and golf for a relax and play experience. I hope Zupapa gets a AES+ release, but if not we will be perfectly fine playing the ACA release on Switch 2. I love this about NeoGeo games, so many of them are easy to just pick up and play, and offer 1 or 2 player.
🕹️AES owner’s question
For those of you that own an AES. I finally pre-ordered an AES+ yesterday, and I have a question regarding 3rd party arcade sticks. I have a Mayflash F300 Elite that I customized to match the button color layout of MVS cabs. Does the AES work well with usb third party sticks using a 15 pin adapter? Is there a method you recommend? I’m hoping I can play two player without having to buy a 2nd official stick straightaway. I love the customized F300. It’s chonky, and the upgraded buttons and joystick are great for playing NeoGeo titles. (I use the red ball top, like the Japanese MVS cabs. I think most here prefer the red bat top though )
Would you expect AES+ pre-orders to sell out?
It would be nice if I could buy at release.
🏆What order would you put these ACA NeoGeo sports games in? Most Fun to Less Fun
I’m looking at the ACA library for another NeoGeo classic. Sports games aren’t my usual pick, but NeoGeo sports games deliver because they are jump-right-in arcade focused fun. I love Big Tournament Golf, and these others caught my eye. Games pictured are: Super Sidekicks, Stakes Winner 2, League Bowling, Baseball Stars 2, Soccer Brawl, and Football Frenzy.
🕹️Are you guys looking to keep your AES+ Arcade Sticks OEM, or to upgrade the buttons and stick gate?
I have not pre-ordered yet, and I’m leaning toward the OG black, BUT if I were to throw in MVS color schemed Sanwa buttons, and maybe a red stick top, that would run well on the white arcade stick. Anyhow, I’ve never used the AES arcade stick. I plan to use my Mayflash F300 Elite as a second arcade stick.
Mayflash F300 Elite and ACA NeoGeo games, and also what game are you getting with your AES+?
Out of absolute anticipation for the AES+, I dusted off my F300 Elite to play some games. I’m trying to use it on my Switch 2 (which is working) but once I start an ACA NeoGeo game, it seems like the game doesn’t recognize the arcade stick properly. I was only able to get it to play as 2nd player. So weird. The buttons are mixed up too. Anyone else used it on Switch 2 with ACA games, and figured out how to set it up? >>Tangent: I’ve only played NeoGeo games at arcades or on Steam/PS/Switch 2 with the ACA ports. I’m so excited about AES+! What game are you guys choosing? I’ve casually played a few NeoGeo titles over the decades, and had a NeoGeo pocket way back (loved it), but I don’t have the experience with the game library a lot of you here do. Exciting stuff.
