Mom was out of walls, so I built an apartment out of blankets in her basement.

This subreddit was recently suggested to me and when I saw it, I thought “oh boy, do I have something for you guys.”

My story is pretty typical and not that exciting. My girlfriend of 5 years kind of had a melt down and decided she was leaving me. We didn’t have much, but we did have a trailer that we owned scott free that we got an amazing deal on, in a decent park. This is in the city that she is from, and I am not from and moved to to be with her. When you’re the man you feel the obligation to be the one to take the harder blow, so I said screw it, keep it all. With nothing except my meager job there was nothing to keep me around in the “city.” (This is all in Montana, even the biggest city is a small town, trust me)

I had no choice but to move back to the small town I was born and raised in of 9,000ish people. It sucks. I’ve burned a thousand bridges here and all my close friends have long since moved away. My mom and I are close, and she had no problem with me crashing for a while and has a huge house, but here’s the caveat. My sister and her boyfriend moved in with her a while back, with their combined three boys, are occupying every bedroom, bathroom, you name it. So I had to build something for myself.

Pictured is what I call my “blanket apartment.” There is a halfway finished basement in this enormous yet occupied house. So I had to make a private space for myself, I’m a 34yo man moving in with his mom for Christ sake. All of this I pulled together from furniture stored in the basement, I don’t own any furniture at the moment, not even a TV. I picked up a fridge and microwave at walmart, prepare my meals in the family kitchen and freeze them. Since I’ve been here I’ve actually gotten fairly healthy and fit. My little “apartment” is obviously a studio, and includes a bathroom, a kitchenette, and a bathroom that (last pic) I swear is only used in times of desperation. Think about it, when I have the morning shift and get up early, I’m not going to try and fight 6 long established residents for the bathroom.

Although I describe the amount of souls in this house, it’s 7 humans, 5 cats, and 3 dogs, as overwhelming just in the amount, everything is peaceful and copacetic and I wouldn’t write this post without mentioning how kind my family has been to me, and how grateful I am that I have them. I know not everybody has that fallback. There was absolutely no room for me and they took me in anyway and let me build this. What happened to me sucks but its also been awesome to sip coffee and chat with my mom every morning and give some guidance to my nephews that I absolutely adore.

Anyway this story has a happy ending. She took me back and trust me boys, she’s worth it. This has been a long 10 weeks but I’m going home. Love you guys <3
