My sweet boy has a heart murmur

My sweet boy has a heart murmur

It’s grade 5. He’s just turned 14 in April. 2 syncopy episodes took us to the vet a couple of weeks ago - they put him on pimobendan. He’s absolutely fine in himself, enjoying walks, eating, generally himself. No more syncopy since being on the medication but a couple of coughs here and there, which isn’t normal for him before the episodes.

I’m so anxious that I’m not sleeping and any movement or noise, I’m getting worried that he’s going to go. Has anyone else had a grade 5 murmur with their JRT?

Success stories? Heart murmur and syncopy

Our 14-year-old Jack Russell cross had two fainting (syncope) episodes after coughing. We saw the vet immediately after both episodes. He’s now booked for an ECG and has started pimobendan for a diagnosed heart murmur (stage 5).

He is currently otherwise normal—eating, happy, and resting breathing rate is under 30.

I’m not asking for diagnosis, just wondering if anyone has had dogs with similar episodes and what their experiences were like. Hearing success stories would really help as I’m feeling very anxious right now.

Stage 5 heart murmur and sudden syncopy episodes

Our 14 year old Jack Russell cross is super active, happy and healthy. On Sunday, he started coughing and had a syncopy episode. He had another episode today on a walk after coughing and we took him to the vets immediately (within 20 minutes of the episode). He recovers within seconds from them but they’re terrifying when they happen. His whole body goes limp.

The vet said he has a stage 5 heart murmur and she wasn’t sure if the syncopy was linked. We’re booked in for an ECG and have been given pimobendan.

He seems completely normal now, begging for a walk (which we’re not going to do today), eating normally with a resting breathing rate of well below 30 per minute. The vet said there’s no fluid on his lungs and other than the murmur, he’s perfectly healthy.

I’ve felt anxious all day and feeling like he could go at any minute.

I lost my dad really suddenly and tragically in December (he was murdered) and I can’t lose my dog. I’m really anxious and stressed. Does anyone have any success stories? 😞
