Greed or Desperation?

I wanted to share something that happened on Saturday May 16, 2026 around lunch time at a chain restaurant in Downtown Langford that I’m not gonna name since people will just bash the company rather than reflect on the incident ☺️

I was in line waiting to order food behind a woman who was clearly unhoused and seemed to be struggling with mental health/addictions. It seemed she had been asking people for money and one kind couple of men and their female friend decided to purchase the unhoused woman some food instead as an act of kindness.. truly amazing that people perform these acts and try to help others out. They ordered her a Coffee, Chocolate croissant and some sort of chicken wrap. After they paid they went on their way and the woman stayed and waited for her food.

Again, they were ahead of me so while I was waiting for my order she’d already collected hers. Suddenly, I saw her rush back to the counter and yell at the employee (who must have been a manager considering how he handled the situation). She got his attention and began explaining she wanted to return her items because it “wasn’t what she wanted”.

The employee asked her what was wrong and if he could offer her another menu item instead and she refused and demanded a cash refund for her order even though she couldn’t actually explain what the reason for the refund was aside from the fact she “didn’t actually want to order it and didn’t want to eat there”. The employee very kindly said, “if you didn’t want to order then food and eat here, then why did you order it in the first place?” She then starting changing her story and went back and forth with him a few times until he asked “Did you pay for this order, or did that group of people buy food for you to try and help you out?” To which she lied and said she spent her own money and it was ridiculous that he would even ask such an offensive question.

At this point, I already had my food but was fully invested in the exchange so when the employee went to look for her receipt, I leaned over the counter just to let him know she wasn’t the one who paid for it. He seemed to go and confirm the same with the employee who took the order then returned to the woman. He very politely explained that they weren’t going to be providing her a refund and again if she wanted some different food they would exchange it but they weren’t giving her the cash money. She began shouting obscenities at him and said he was being unfair to her.. then she stopped suddenly and asked for a bag and extra napkins when she realized her hopes of cash refund were gone. I almost burst out laughing when he told her no and to leave the restaurant and explained “I’d like to help you but you called me a b*tch” and walked away from her.

I don’t want to make assumptions and share my opinion on where the money was going to be used as I truly don’t know her full circumstances. But I really can’t believe how greedy people can be after receiving a kind gesture from another person then taking advantage of that kindness to suit your own needs. We should all be so lucky to have someone offer us a free meal on our darkest days. After the first “no” I would have left and not continued to make a scene. Those food workers don’t get paid enough to deal with such things.

To the couple and their friend who made the act of kindness, thank you for being great people and helping out someone who was struggling. I hope you continue to make our community a better place by offering a helping hand to those in need. ✨
