Who's running on lowering taxes for Langford?

Most of us would probably agree that the significant tax increases for Langford hit pretty hard on residents. The city grew so fast that it didn't have basic services that other cities had historically.

Garbage, sewer, fire, police, Parks and Rec are typically run by existing city facilities. And without blaming councils of the past about how we got here, I think it's important that we figure out what we want going forward .

Do we want Langford to continue to grow in population and have infrastructure that the city owns and operates?

The answer to this would inform future council members on the direction they should take. I personally want Langford to have a clear direction on the size and type of city it wants to be.

I would rather vote for those who have a vision for the city, instead of constantly talking about problems. It's true we need to fix the problems but we also need a vision that inspires and entices people to move here and stay living here.

Did Stew Young influence MP Aaron Gunns stance on reconciliation, the environment, LGBTQ2+ rights and other hot topics?

Mayoral Candidates

Someone asked about the difference between the mayoral candidates… and then deleted their post. It’s a good question, though, so I’m putting something about our current mayor and the former mayor in the comments. However, our current mayor has not declared his candidacy. And it’s always possible another contender will step up prior to the deadline.

Langford missing a video store ?

Wondering in Langford if there is any interest in opening a retro blockbuster style (not chain ) video rental store . Real old school feel with plenty of options for rentals on games , movies and more . Asking for input on if it's worth the thought or not even . With so many options these days?

Which City department handles installation of garbage cans at bus stops?

There's a particular bus stop on Happy Valley Rd that ends up with tons of litter all over the place all the time, and it's especially annoying to deal with on windy days. Sometimes it's Starbucks/Slurpee cups. Sometimes it's takeout containers left scattered around. Sometimes there are literal dirty diapers. The bus stop has plenty of space for a garbage can (and the stop just down and across the road has one!).

I understand that the City is responsible for installing and maintaining garbage bins at bus stops. In July last year, I tried to contact the City of Langford through their contact form on the City website, and received no response. At the end of August last year, I contacted the Engineering department as I was informed that it should fall under their purview, and I still received zero response.

Now that the anniversary of my first attempts to reach out has arrived, I'm wondering who else I should be trying to contact? Has anyone had success contacting the City in relation to public garbage cans?

If you've never been to a Pokémon TCG Prerelease...

I help run a couple of the local prerelease events now, but before that I was simply a dad who decided to take his son to try one. We had such a great experience that we've been attending ever since. That was around eight main sets ago!

My son was six when we went to our first prerelease. I played while he watched, helped me make decisions (sometimes spotting things I missed!), and by our third event he was playing on his own.

I honestly think prereleases are one of the best ways to experience the Pokémon TCG.

For $40–55 (depending on the store), you receive:

  • A 40-card prebuilt deck
  • An exclusive stamped prerelease promo card
  • 5–7 booster packs from a set that hasn't officially released yet

You spend the first 30 minutes opening your packs and making any changes you'd like to your deck. Then everyone plays three short matches using the decks they just built. Since everyone starts with similar cards, it's a much more level playing field than regular competitive play. You don't need an expensive deck or to know the current meta to have fun.

One of my favourite parts is the atmosphere. Opening Pokémon packs is always exciting—but opening a brand-new set alongside 30 other Pokémon fans, seeing everyone's big pulls, discovering the new artwork together, and celebrating each other's luck makes it a completely different experience.

It's also incredibly welcoming to newer players. If you know the basic rules (or have played a little on Pokémon TCG Live), you'll be just fine. Experienced players are usually more than happy to answer questions or help someone who's attending their first event.

One of the coolest things I've noticed is how often first-time players become regulars. Almost every prerelease I see someone who's a little nervous walking in, and by the end of the afternoon they're already asking when the next one is.

The next Pokémon: Pitch Black prerelease events are happening this weekend. I'll be running events at Everything Games on Saturday, July 4, and Epic Games & More on Sunday, July 5. If you've ever been curious about trying a prerelease event now is the time and the next opportunity won't be until November.

Happy to answer any questions if you're wondering what prereleases are like or whether they'd be a good fit for you or your kids!

Yet another racist incident!

This evening, my wife (5 months pregnant), our child, and I stopped at Chipotle at the Westshore mall for dinner. After parking, we made our way across the crosswalk when a Skip the Dishes driver (a blonde woman, appearing to be in her late 20s) cut us off rather than wait for us to finish crossing. We stepped aside and let her pass.
As we stepped off the curb and were crossing the intersection, she reversed her car, cut us off a second time, and parked illegally in the fire lane in front of the restaurant. I said nothing and continued walking toward the door.
She then got out of her car and screamed at us: “You people are everywhere.”
I calmly replied, “Wow. Real classy,” and went inside to get our meals.

I pretended this didn’t affect me, but I guess it did.

Cage Match

Current Mayor Scott Goidmanson vs. Former Mayor Stew Young.

Who would win in a UFC style cage match in the octogon?

Scott is younger, taller, has the reach and speed. Knows the rules, a finesse fighter, can get inside his opponents head.

Stew is older but experienced, raised in the streets, a brawler from the OG Langford. Knows how to take a hit.

I'd say if Goodmanson can stay out of reach and wear his opponent down, he would win.

If Stew can get in close and take his opponent to the ground, it's his.

Goldstream Gazette: Colwood takes back control of form and character development permits

https://goldstreamgazette.com/2026/05/28/colwood-takes-back-control-of-form-and-character-development-permits/

Councilor Ian Ward said, “The goal here is to support increased council oversight and transparency, while ensuring fairness, predictability and objective rules.”

I agree those should be the goals. I’d argue that empowering staff to consistently apply the policies council has already adopted is one of the best ways to achieve fairness, predictability and objective rules.

Bringing larger development permits back to council increases council’s workload and creates more opportunities for organized opposition to delay projects, as we saw with Colwood Creek. And could result in staff being micromanaged. If the policies need to change, council can change them. Otherwise, staff should be empowered to administer them consistently.

Is Scott Perry Helping or Hurting Stew Young?

As expected in this election campaign, Scott Perry has emerged as one of Stew Young’s most visible online defenders. While he holds no official role, his constant defence of Young and attacks on Young’s critics have effectively made him an unofficial surrogate.

So far, Young’s campaign has largely centred on one message: lower taxes. But campaigns are judged by more than their platform. They’re also shaped by the people who become their public face online.

Perry’s public record includes being removed from a Langford council meeting, later being temporarily barred from attending council meetings in person, and publicly acknowledging that he was the individual who had been outside Councillor Keith Yacucha’s home taking photographs, an incident that prompted an RCMP investigation.

Given that history, does Perry’s combative online presence reinforce Young’s campaign, or does it make it harder for Young to present himself as someone who has listened, learned, and changed since 2022?

Curious to hear what others think.

Scott Perry is a potential Langford council candidate for 2026. Here is his FB page https://www.facebook.com/share/1BumkQnf1C/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Street workout?

My family and I are new to Langford, just moved here recently and I'm wondering if there are any street workout "playgrounds"? Mainly looking for a pull-up bar.

Preferably around the Goldstream/Jacklin/Station/Peatt area? Not a fan of driving to get the workout in, but obviously if there's nothing nearby, any street workout place would do.

Thanks in advance!

Colwood Councilor Ian Ward feels “it’s unfortunate that’s we’ve gotten to a place where it’s adversarial”

https://goldstreamgazette.com/2026/06/26/disagreement-over-future-of-colwoods-stanley-park-derails-council-meeting/

It’s unfortunate we’ve gotten to a place where it’s become adversarial,’ says Coun. Ian Ward. Funny how that works. The political playbook that helped turn Langford council meetings into a regular spectacle has now made its way to Colwood. The man loves “Our Langford” but not on his turf.

What’s the Scoop on Poop? (AKA Frequently Asked Questions: West Shore Environmental Fee Changes)

Due to all the misinformation flying around about what the city should have done and when, city staff put out an official fact check. it’s long. But if you find yourself wondering where the truth lies in all the claims and posturing, here it is.

>Why did the City not renegotiate the contract four years ago? Isn’t the system paid for now? Why did the City wait until 2025 to start negotiations?

>It is important to clarify that the sewer system has never been “paid off” at any point to date.

>Discussions with West Shore Environmental Services did not begin in 2025, they date back to approximately 2022 and have been ongoing since then. Sometime in 2022 the deferral account, (not debt, but it keeps getting referred to as debt) shifted from a negative balance to a positive balance. This change in the balance was a key factor to begin negotiations and has included broader contract discussions between the parties. It is very important to point out that under both the existing agreement, and the proposed amended agreement, the City does not have the authority to unilaterally set sewer rates. The contract, as originally agreed to in 2004 does not allow for the rates to be adjusted independently and therefore must be negotiated between the City and WSES.

>As a result, the City could not simply renegotiate rates in isolation several years ago. The changes to the contract that were required and agreed upon are more comprehensive, and it has taken time to negotiate and reach an agreement on the full set of amendments now being advanced.

>The amendments not only include the reduced Sewer Capital Recovery Fees, but also the elimination of the Incremental Storage Improvement Fees and the approximately 20% reduction in sewer user fees.
https://www.letschatlangford.ca/factcheck/news_feed/wses

Compare this to what Stew said in his campaign launch speech earlier this month:

>“The biggest complaint I get is not about we’ve got the sewers handled. A little bit high-priced. They’re charging $10,000 for it. It should be $5,000 because the company that’s doing it is making too much money now, and the money is going into the bank

>“So when we put in the sewers in Langford, there was a $30 million debt. And I said, ‘We cannot have a $30 million debt in Langford. I don’t want to see debt like that.’ So what we did is we raised it to $10,000 temporarily with the support of the developing community and the house builders. And then when we did that, we said, ‘When that $30 million gets down to zero, we will lower it to $5,000.’ And that’s what you should be paying for sewer hookup now. It’s still $10,000 in the extra money that we paid down that $30 million inside of four and a half years.

>And now you can imagine four years has gone by. That money that was paid off four years ago and how much money — that’s another $20, $30 million in somebody else’s pocket, and it’s coming out of yours.”

What happened to the Glen Lake Inn development?

https://www.timescolonist.com/business/daycare-planned-for-glen-lake-inn-in-langford-4597314

According to this 2013 Time Colonist the old Glen Lake Inn was set to be come a day care and medical clinic. What happened? I'm not so sure about a day care attached to the pub but it would be a much better location for the medical clinic rather than on Happy Valley. Although the old fire hall would make a good spot for the day care.
