Starting university soon. What do students wish they knew beforehand?

I’m starting university soon, and the closer it gets, the more I’m realizing that I’m nervous about things beyond academics.

I’m wondering how people actually make friends when everyone is meeting for the first time, how to approach seniors and professors without feeling awkward, and how much that first impression really matters.

There’s also the pressure of figuring out what you want to do with your life. Some people seem to enter university already knowing exactly what career they want, while others are still figuring themselves out. I’m definitely in the second group.

I’m also hoping to build a good network and explore different interests during university, but I don’t want every interaction to feel like forced “networking.”

For anyone who has already been through university in Karachi or elsewhere in Pakistan:

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before your first day?

And for those starting soon: what are you most nervous or excited about?

Looking for a Networking Partner to Learn & Build With

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m currently learning networking fundamentals as part of my cybersecurity journey, and I’m looking for someone who’s around a similar level and wants to learn alongside me.

My plan isn’t just to watch courses and take notes. I’m building hands-on networking labs and documenting them on GitHub so I can gradually turn my learning into a proper technical portfolio.

I’m hoping to find 1–2 people who would be interested in:

Studying networking fundamentals together

Doing hands-on labs and troubleshooting exercises

Discussing concepts when one of us gets stuck

Sharing useful resources without overwhelming each other

Keeping each other accountable and actually staying consistent

Eventually moving toward more cybersecurity-focused networking

I’m especially interested in learning by building and troubleshooting, rather than simply memorizing theory.

My longer-term goal is to have a solid technical portfolio by the end of my first university semester and start working toward an entry-level IT/networking/cybersecurity opportunity.

You don’t need to be an expert. In fact, I’d prefer someone who is also learning. We can figure things out together, challenge each other, and avoid getting stuck alone for days on something that could be solved through a 10-minute discussion.

We can figure out a simple schedule and maybe create a small Discord study group if there’s enough interest.

How Would You Start Learning Cybersecurity in 2026?

I'm currently getting into networking and trying to figure out how to approach cybersecurity properly from the ground up.

For those of you already working in the field, I'm curious: if you were starting again in 2026, how would you approach the first year?

I'm trying to understand what is actually worth spending time on, when you'd start getting hands-on, and how you'd gradually move from networking fundamentals into cybersecurity without trying to learn everything at once.

I'm not looking for a certification checklist. I'd much rather hear from people who have actually gone through the process, what helped you build a strong foundation, what you would do differently today, and where you think someone starting out should put their effort.

Would be interested to hear how you'd approach it.
