I made a chess game where you pick your starting pieces. What do you think the best strategy is?

I call it picklechess! You pick your pieces, then play mini chess.

It plays just like normal chess, except pawns only promote to one of your captured pieces. That makes queens better than they might seem at first. I think there are a lot of viable strategies.

You can play with just the classic pieces, or you can mix in fairy pieces for variety. The fairy piece modes are hard. I almost never win.

Everything is free, and it plays in a browser. You only need an account to play ranked games.

On a personal note: I am all-in on picklechess. There’s a billion things I want to add, and I’m working on it every day. I really hope you enjoy it. If you have ideas or want to talk strategy, swing by the discord.

What do you think of the fairy pieces? Are there any more I should add?

I added ranked play to picklechess! Who is going to be top pickle?

In picklechess, you draft your starting pieces with a budget, and then play a smaller game of chess from that position.

I posted last week and got some great suggestions. That's all been implemented, along with ranked play.

I'm really curious to see how the strategy shakes out at the top level. I don't want to give too much away, but early data is showing a wide range of viable strategies.

Rules are in the help menu in the top-right, but all you need to know to jump in is 1) Capture the king to win, and 2) Pawns promote to one of your captured pieces.

Picklechess is free, it plays in a browser, and you only need an account if you want to play ranked. Without an account, you can play a friend, play a bot, or join a random casual match.

I call it picklechess! You draft your starting pieces with a budget, and then play a smaller game of chess from that position. I’m curious how the strategy shakes out once people start finding builds.

It’s free, no account needed, and you can play a friend or use random matchmaking.

I’d love feedback on the rules, balance, UI, or any builds that seem especially strong.

Edit: Just added bot opponents. See if you can beat them!
