What do you do for kids who use scripts functionally?

So exactly what the title says lol. I know GLP isn’t super evidence-based at the moment, and honestly I’m less concerned about the label and more interested in the clinical relevance.

I have a new kindergarten student who uses scripts very functionally. For example, when he doesn’t want to do something, he’ll say “I’m scared” or “help me.” I know these scripts are meaningful communication and are serving a clear purpose for him, I’m not looking to extinguish or replace them.

My question is more about how you build upon that communication clinically. Do you break down the script and model slight variations so the child can eventually use similar language across different contexts? For example, if “I’m scared” is functioning as a way to protest or avoid something, would you model things like “I don’t want to,” “no thank you,” “I’m all done,” etc..

Basically, I’m wondering how you help a child like this move from a script that is already functional and meaningful toward a more flexible repertoire of ways to communicate the same or related functions, without treating the original script as something that needs to be fixed.

When are LC supporters going to hold her accountable for literally anything?

I genuinely don’t understand the overwhelming amount of support for LC on every other platform, especially after Dr. Tufts’ testimony. What am I missing?

What continues to shock me is how much of the discussion seems to focus on what other people should have done, while largely skirting over the choices Lindsay herself made. She acknowledged going to multiple providers rather than following through with the treatment/management plan that had been recommended. Tufts advised her to have one provider overseeing her medication management, yet she continued seeing multiple providers. She also consistently denied suicidal and homicidal ideation on the forms from Dr. Tufts. And somehow the responsibility keeps getting shifted back onto the providers. Why was Tufts expected to determine whether she was being truthful on those forms? Why was it their responsibility to somehow know that she was seeing multiple other providers? Why are we expecting providers to read her mind or have 25/8 eyes on her? Obviously, there can be legitimate criticism of the people and systems around her. I’m not arguing that nobody else made mistakes. But accountability shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. Other people potentially failing her does not mean Lindsay had no responsibility for her own decisions.

It feels like every discussion becomes “Why didn’t XYZ do this?” or “Why didn’t Patrick know this?” or “Why didn’t the providers realize that?”, but very rarely, “What responsibility did Lindsay have for her own actions and for being truthful with the people treating her?”

At what point are we allowed to acknowledge both things: that the system and the people around her may have failed in certain ways AND that Lindsay herself made choices that contributed to what happened? Because right now it feels like accountability is being applied to literally everyone except her. 🙄

Sponge candy in DFW?

Does anybody know of any chocolatiers in the metroplex who make sponge candy? Had some while on a trip recently and it was so good have not stopped thinking about it since! Wanted to see if I could find it locally in lieu of paying to ship it😅

LGBTQ+ SLPs..

Happy Pride Month !!🌈

I’m a Texas school-based SLP working in elementary who came from an even more conservative area, think southern baptist. I’ve been unpacking internalized homophobia and have realized I have a lot of anxiety around being perceived as gay at work and the unspoken pressure to keep my personal life vague.

For those of y’all in schools or I guess in any setting really, how do you navigate it? Are you out, selectively out, or keep your professional and private life completely separate? One of my students recently asked if I have kids (no), then if I have a husband (also no), and finally asked if I really “go home to nothing.” So apparently those are the only three options. 😭

I’d love any perspectives!!
