Mercenary Painting Ideas

Mercenary Painting Ideas

Hey all,

I am about to start painting the mercenaries from FH and WOM. That's 24 new mercs - 16 gray, 4 purple, and 4 red. I also already painted the 4 from the elf quests.

I typically like to keep some of the color of the base as it separates out the types of figures. So the goblins have green sides, skeletons have white, etc. I'm at a loss with these, though, especially as I haven't played either of these quests and I am not sure how they are used. I have seen some discussion here about this but I was really hoping some of you may have some examples of what you have done and/or some feedback on a few ideas I had:

1 Keep the colors. Initial thought is I don't love this, as it seems like the colors were intended to indicate friendly/neutral/enemy units, which makes sense, but there doesn't seem to be a clear reason for the numbers of each. For example, you may hire 2 swordsmen, but there is only 1 red one by default.

2 Paint them all gray, like the FH ones. Kind of keeps them all neutral and unified like the green/white enemies, as their own tribe/type of unit. I kind of like this, though it could be confusing if some of them are hired and some are enemies. Maybe I could have a colored disc that attaches to the base - I have magnetized bases, so that might be an interesting fix that is not permanent.

3 Do some other combo of red/purple/gray that is more based around the actual likely need of each in gameplay. But I'm guessing it still may not match up every time with what I need for the game.

4 Any other options?

Would love to see what others have done
