AITA for telling my sister she needs to dress professional for an interview?
Basically what the title says.
My (17F) sister (20F) had an interview yesterday for a internship/placement for an animation company- this company specifically works with her University and only gives out 1 job a year. Essentially, she'd take a year off school to work with them, then return and graduate the year after. It's full time and paid, and if the company are impressed they can potentially offer a job once she graduates. My sister's an incredible animator and there is absolutely no way she won't get the job- except for one thing: how she dresses.
I'm not insulting her or trying to 'dim her sparkle' in anyway, but my sister dresses very uniquely. Her style consists of bright colours, tons of patterns, only vintage/thrifted items, and the ugliest jewellery known to man. I don't really like her style, but my sister has dealt with bullying her whole life and its exciting to see her finally let go of people's opinions of her. However, I think she's lost the average person's understanding of 'casual' in the process.
The issue at hand started yesterday when my sister told me that our Mum was urging her to dress more professional for her interview. My Mum has worked at a very traditional office job for the past 20 odd years and works in a leadership position where she oversees a small group of people. Essentially, professional clothes and interviews are kinda her thing.
My sister, however, wasn't happy with my Mum and asked me to tell her to stop. Unfortunately, I agreed with our Mum. I told my sister it wouldn't be horrible if she wore something plainer for her interview, as people were extremely judgemental and could feel she was being disrespectful if she wore something totally crazy. As I was speaking I watched her get more upset and I (regretfully) kept going, and eventually suggested she maybe borrow something from Mum, who has countless plain but cute tops to wear. My sister got very upset.
She accused me of trying to change her or 'make her normal' and also said how animation was different from other jobs and her interviewers/future co-workers would probably be dressed very casually. To me, this isn't true. In my opinion, the career doesn't matter- you dress professionally to an interview.
She continued to get upset as I explained this and cut me off and told me to stop. I immediately turned and left her room without a word. I was very upset as I was just trying to help her and she kept disagreeing with me. The main problem came when I went to bed early (very upset) and she went and told all of this to our parents, though, according to my Mum, with a very different series of events.
I've been in a bad mood all day, and due to some mood issues I've been having, have started a spiral down into a considerably 'bad week.' However, I've started wondering if I was being rude for asking her to dress nice and should maybe apologise.
AITA?
