The Real Problem with Smallville's Lana Lang

The Real Problem with Smallville's Lana Lang

Lana's main problem on Smallville is because Al Gough and Miles Millar based her character off a barely 2 minute scene from Superman the Movie (1978).

As such, they ignored most of Lana's 51 year characterization from the comics at the time.

In the Comics, Lana was actually Clark Kent's best friend, not just his crush. In neither Pre-Crisis nor in Post-Crisis comics did Clark ever look longingly at Lana from afar, while a football bully boyfriend of Lana's kept them apart. They were friends, they hung out with each other, got mad at each other, had fun together.

The only thing that Comics Lana and Smallville Lana had in common was their obsession with figuring out Clark's "secret".

Unfortunately, Richard Donner, the director of Superman the Movie, used a very shallow version of Clark and Lana's relationship and people believed it. More unfortunate, Al and Miles chose that version as the foundation for their Lana and Clark.

And then they created Chloe Sullivan who basically got all of Lana's characterization from the comics. From being Clark's best female friend, to Pete liking Chloe (in the comics Pete marries Lana), even to being a journalist as Pre-Crisis Lana became reporter at the Daily Planet.

Had Al and Miles just allowed Lana to be Lana, fans of the show wouldn't find her characterization and writing on the show to be so controversial.

John Jones Should Have Become a Series Regular

Especially in Season 8 when he was depowered and was working as a Homicide Detective in Metropolis as Clark was working at the Daily Planet.

It would have made more sense than to have Oliver/Green Arrow as a series regular.

A missed opportunity.

I Hated the Election Storyline

For both Jonathan and Lex it seemed out of character.

It was out of character for Jonathan because he was a man who wanted a low-profile life. Which makes sense because he had "illegally" adopted a super powered alien from outer space. The idea that he would thrust himself and his family into the public limelight just seemed ridiculous to me. And all for him to die the night he was elected was just a waste of time.

Also it was out of character for Lex. Becoming a State Senator is just too small for Lex. At this time he should have been focused on building his power base and expanding Luthorcorp or actually creating Lexcorp. Instead of trying to become a senator, he should have been buying and bribing senators, getting governors and representatives elected so that they would all owe him favors and he could influence the law through them as a kind of puppet master. I know it was a nod to the comics where Lex became President of the United States, but in the comics Lex never tried for something so small like being a State Senator, he jumped right for the top.

And on another note, being a State Senator, and later a U.S. Senator for Martha, was much too big for the Kents. It would have made more sense for either Jonathan or Martha to have ran for Mayor of Smallville or County Commissioner. Being a Senator was too much for the parents of Clark Kent. They're supposed to be small-town folks who are content to stay in Smallville. It's Clark who's supposed to be the one who goes off to the big city and as a reporter gets involved with crime and government intrigue, not his parents.

Lex should have killed Lionel in Season 5

The more I keep thinking about this the more I believe that Lionel should have died at the hands of Lex in Season 5.

It would have been a perfect mirror image for Clark and Lex.

As we know, in Season 5, Clark goes through the loss of his father, Jonathan and has to deal with the guilt that Jonathan died because Clark went back in time to save Lana.

And then to have Lex, in the same Season, deliberately kill Lionel, his father, would have been poetic and a great point to show Lex as a villain.

Because the truth is that by Season 7, when Lex finally does kill Lionel, it felt empty. One, because Lionel had well overstayed his welcome as a character. And two because we don't see Lex actually having to deal with the aftermath of this murder because the season is over in four episodes and Michael Rosenbaum chose not to renew his contract.

I Miss Smart Aleck/Class Clown Shaggy

In the original Scooby Doo shows, Shaggy was witty, clever, curious and didn't mind making fun of the bad guys or his friends or himself.

It seems to me that later incarnations have completely removed that aspect from his personality. Now he's either just hungry or scared and they portray him as kind of dumb. But before he seemed like a pretty well rounded teenager who actually had a brain and really enjoyed his life (except for supernatural dangers).

Now they try to make Shaggy seem like he's basically a loser and the only person who understands him is Scooby who he shares half a brain with.

Just saying, the original Shaggy seemed pretty cool.

Found the Real Life Beast/Prince Adam

I don't know his name, but he appeared in a music video from the 1980s. When I saw him I immediately thought about the human version of Beast aka Prince Adam.

The music video was 1985's "All Cried Out" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.ft. Full Force.
