Step by step apricots painting!
Childhood: climbing trees and eating apricots straight from the branches
Adulthood: living in a country where apricots seem almost fictional
The sofa search failed successfully… so I painted furniture shop flowers instead
Who knew buying a sofa in India would turn into a full-time side quest?
We moved into a new place in February, and our living room has basically been everything except an actual living room - yoga studio, clothes drying zone, Christmas tree storage, random box warehouse… you name it.
Months into sofa hunting, I somehow got distracted by these flowers in one of the furniture stores instead. Took a photo, came home, and started this piece. It’s becoming a mix of soft pastels + oil pastels, and honestly feels more successful than the sofa search so far.
Sharing a few progress shots because I’ve been really enjoying the process a lot!
Oil pastels for the background combined with Impasto Medium - 20 min study on how the paste works
Would you believe me if I said I only eat sweets so I can take a picture as a reference for my quick sketches?
Most of us here spend our days deep in code, product roadmaps, or staring at dashboards. I'm curious how the people in this community disconnect - specifically those of you who draw, sketch, or paint.
There's something I find really interesting about people in tech who also make art. The two feel like opposites on the surface, but I suspect that's exactly why it works for so many people.
A few things I'd genuinely love to hear about:
What form of art do you do? Traditional (pencil, watercolor, acrylics, pastels) or digital (Procreate)? Or something more unexpected?
How does it actually help you? Is it pure mental decompression, a way to stay creative outside of work, something that quietly helps you think through problems - or just the satisfaction of making something that doesn't have a bug tracker?
What keeps you consistent or what makes it hard? Do you have a routine, a sketchbook you carry around, a specific time of day? Or does it come in bursts and then disappear for weeks?
I'll go first: I find that making something with my hands where there's no "undo" button and no right answer is one of the few things that genuinely quiets the part of my brain that's always optimizing. But staying consistent is a real struggle. Life gets busy and the sketchbook ends up on the shelf :(
Trying to find my way how to stop overworking daily and to have proper rest.
Curious if others feel the same way, or if your experience is completely different. Would love to hear from the artists hiding in this community.
