PocketZot can now run DCSS offline on iPhone and Android
Dear DCSS friends,
Wanted to let you know, PocketZot can now run DCSS fully offline on your iPhone or Android device.
For those who've never heard of this, PocketZot is an unofficial DCSS app designed for phones in portrait mode. At first it was WebTiles-only. Now it plays offline too. I started it because there are no DCSS apps on the App Store (due to licensing), so I'm building the thing I wanted for my own phone, and putting it out there in case others find it useful. And of course, this would have no reason to exist without the dev team's amazing work over the years. Chapeau!
Marketing department [it's me] asked to share the following:
>Trekking through a remote location but can't be bothered with the view? Hordes of pesky spectators ogling and kibitzing your WebTiles games? You are in luck! Just play offline, even in airplane mode! Works on iOS and Android. Add to home screen as a PWA. https://pocketzot.app
FAQ:
- What?
- Offline DCSS on your mobile device.
- How?
- PocketZot is originally a WebTiles client (and still is). Offline mode runs a WebTiles server on your device, and points that client at it.
- I'm still curious.
- Not a question, but sure: the app now runs a Wasm-compiled headless DCSS WebTiles binary directly on your phone. It's a one-time download of ~22MB, then you can play with or without a connection. No account needed. Current deployed version is a 0.35-a0 trunk build. The software comes with no warranty, so use the export button to backup characters occasionally if you care about them.
- That's all well and good, but I really like WebTiles, why shouldn't I just use PocketZot to play WebTiles?
- You totally can. Offline mode is for when you have no connection, or want a game in parallel to WebTiles, or want to use wizmode, or for the degenerate save-scummers among us, or for those who truly prefer to play offline, which I know some people do!
- Anything else I should know?
- If you try the app, be sure to check Gestures at the bottom of the Settings menu. You can also customize your controls organization there, etc.

May you be happy. May you be peaceful. May you be free from the suffering of being unable to carry DCSS in your pocket.
