Another World is about a girl that recently died and is guided by a spirit through the afterlife to her rebirth. I got to see this at CAAMfest. The film is brutal and violent. It is not for children. It showcases people at their most desperate, disturbed, and downtrodden. Death and brutality is pervasive in every scene. It gave me feelings like watching Grave of the Fireflies. There was a haunting beauty in its imagery and accompanied with wicked stories of starvation, suicide, regret, and exploitation. For every story of death, it is followed through by a brief peace where the girl Yuri and her spirit guide Gudo traverse the gorgeous, surreal environments of Another World. Their friendship is the best part of the movie and feels like the only source of light in this nihilistic story.
I highly recommend the film with the warning it is a brutal story and not family-friendly. Do not bring your children to this. If it releases in the U.S., it would definitely be rated R for violence and themes.
