I got tired of paywalled, ad-filled health trackers, so I built a free, offline, open source one that works like a game
I've tried a lot of health tracking apps and kept running into the same five problems:
The good ones are good until everything useful is locked behind a premium plan.
The free ones are full of ads.
Most of what they track isn't what I actually wanted.
Nothing is in one place. One app for diet, another for sleep, another for steps.
I had no idea where my data was going.
So I built my own as a side project. It's called Health Quest, it's for Android, and I've been using it every day. I'm sharing it in case it's useful to anyone else.
What it is
One app for food, fasting, steps, exercise, sleep and weight. Every day starts at 0 and builds to a score out of 100, so you get a straight answer to how the day went.
Why it's built like a game
Most people (me included) stop tracking after a couple of weeks. So the whole thing is designed to keep you coming back:
- A daily score with a grade from S to F.
- One suggested next step on the home screen, with the points it's worth.
- Streaks that only count days you actually did well. Opening the app doesn't keep one alive.
- XP and levels, plus daily and weekly goals.
- Over 100 badges, some hidden until you get close.
- Badges for bouncing back after a bad day, since that's where most people quit.
- Each week it tells you the one change that would lift your score the most.
**The parts I cared about most**
- Free. No premium tier, nothing locked.
- No ads.
- Fully offline. No account, no sign-up.
- Data stays on your phone. The one exception is an optional AI feature (food lookup and a daily summary), which does nothing unless you add your own API key.
- Export to Excel or a JSON backup whenever you want.
- Open source, MIT licensed.
What to know before you try it
- Android only.
- It's not on the Play Store. You install the APK yourself, so Android will warn you about installing from an unknown source. The source is public if you'd rather read it or build it yourself first.
- Steps sync through Health Connect.
- The default food list is based on what I eat. You can add your own foods.
- It's a one-person side project, so expect rough edges.

It's built with React and Capacitor, with everything stored locally in IndexedDB.
I'd really like feedback, especially on what's confusing or missing. Happy to answer questions.
