Rescoring issues - scores changed - got another email with no change - and lost refund

Hi PTE Community,

We recently came across a few students who complained that they wrote the PTE and didn't get the desired scores. Took risk and then applied for Rescoring. Their scores changed, which were better than the original scores; they were able to download the new score cards. After some time, they got another email stating that there had been no change and they were not eligible for a refund, and even the scores were returned to the original score card.

People approached the customer support team, who constantly gave them generic replies without any proper resolution. They also raised concerns with the forms, but after waiting for a few days, they couldn't get any positive feedback either.

We identified this issue and have raised this concern with the Pearson Team, and they have said that they will look into this issue.

I would kindly request you to ping me if you have faced any issues similar to this, and we will try our level best to follow up with Pearson to try to get some resolution.

Although I'm not sure whether this will give us any positive result, I believe we should at least try to bring this matter to their notice.

PTE Scoring Algorithm Updated

These days, there has been lots of changes in speaking evaluation since past 2 weeks and I have rarely seen people getting superiors in the past 10 days. I guess they have made the marking criteria more focused on content which is reducing students scores with 86 in speaking even with full graphs of short and extended speaking.

Although I did raised this concern with Pearson officials recently but I'm not sure when this will get resolved. I hope they take the action immediately and fix this to avoid losing trust of students.

Getting a good score in PTE increases the chances to get quick student visas?

Not sure about visa approval because it is completely dependent on the home affairs department, but definitely it will encourage the universities to consider you for your amazing communication skills, as it will make your application stand out as an exceptional and eligible candidate.

Applied for rescoring, got email about refund initiated, and score report is available, but not able to see on portal. What to do?

Yes, it is quite common these days, maybe because lots of people are going for rescoring these days. But, don't worry about it. Just call Pearson customer support and inform them about this, they will fix it from backend. It usually happens due to technical glitches of the portal.

Is it possible that Pearson limits a country's people to secure superior or CLB 9?

Test centres and student's performance on the exam day, plays a major role in determining the scores. Many of the times, students get panicked, hesitated, loses confidence, goes over or under word limits, gets distracted, can't make quick notes,, makes spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, don't manage the time properly, don't have good pronunciation and fluency, increases their pitch and voice, have poor vocabulary.

These are the major bottlenecks of people. People still get good scores but majority prefer to hide it, while people who don't get scores, they don't want to learn from their mistakes and creates rumors causing panic among people.

If I go for rescoring, will that impact my future attempts?

Don't worry. Previous complains, case ids, appeals, rescoring request doesn't have any impact on your future exam attempts. Every exam attempt is treated separately. So, you don't have to worry about it. Just make sure that you are practicing in the correct way, so that you can crack the Pearson AI algorithm. All the best. Hope you get your desired scores soon. Pearson replaced headphones for the PTE test for better exam experience

Previously it was Andrea EDU 455, now it's going to be EPOS Impact 860T ANC.

These are going to be active noise cancellation headphones because a lot of students were raising the complains that the Pearson headphones were also capturing the environment voice, which was reducing their scores. So these headphones are a bit advanced and will actively cancel any kind of background noise, allowing only the candidates voice to get captured during the exam.

Price comparison

Andrea EDU 455 - 105 AUD

EPOS Impact 860T ANC - 175 AUD

Should I go for rescoring? - One of the most commonly asked questions in PTE community

In majority of the cases which I have seen, if you try for improvement in one thing, they will reduce your scores in other things. So, although rescoring won't help in majority of cases, but since marks will change and you have high chances of getting refund, try your luck. You never know when luck might be in your favour. If you are confident about your performance on your exam day, I strongly suggest you to go for it.

Reading Strategies

To improve reading scores, there are no shortcuts - first understand this thing. Reading is one task, which relies solely on your efforts. First learn the basic concepts of reading comprehension first.

Basic techniques like skimming, Scanning, selection and elimination are really helpful in time management and getting your answers quickly. Work on your contextual understanding skills. SVO - (subject, verb - object) understanding. Do daily 10 blanks and try to go through explanation in detail - why, how, what, when, where - ask yourself these questions whenever you are doing blanks. This introspection abilities will improve your understanding skills a lot. Collocations, active and passive voice, tenses, prepositions understanding, contrasting statements, and inference methods are really useful to enhance your scores.

For SWT - Paraphrasing is not needed. Just make sure that you are writing properly related sentences and meaningful sentences with appropriate connectors. Take care of time management and word count. Avoid spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

For RO - Focus on the independent sentences, use noun pronoun rules, contrasting rules, time specific rules, stepwise rules.

For HIW - Focus on the audio and as soon as you find the wrong word, immediately mark it.

All the best. Hope you get your desired scores soon.

Why do I always get lesser scores in speaking and then when I go for rescoring, my marks improve. What's the reason for this? Is AI inaccurate or does human evaluator work in a different way?

Answer: Sometimes AI will not be able to recognize your response. When you go for Rescoring, it goes with human evaluation. When they evaluate, they are able to understand that your responses were already good, but AI was not able to understand your response. That's the reason humans will increase your scores by considering all other aspects of your response like - Pronunciation, fluency, content as a natural human being interaction.

Question: How many attempts of PTE can be taken in a year?

Answer: There is no limitation as such, but only rule is that in 12 months, you can take PTE 12 times. If you want to take for the 13th time in a 12 months period, then you need to show Pearson regarding the documentation for why you need it urgently - due to some university deadline, or invite expiring, or due to some genuine reason. These things will although have very chance of getting accepted, but you still have this option.

What is the most dangerous piece of outdated advice still being shared by tutors who haven't adapted to the recent scoring updates?

Keyword templates are still working.

Read Aloud still gives good scores.

Summarize Written Text can still be cracked by blindly copying and pasting 3 random sentences.

No idea about the latest Competent (Band 6), Proficient (Band 7), or Superior (Band 8) Score requirements, marking criteria, or skills analysis.

Still asking people to waste money on multiple attempts unnecessarily, rather than guiding them in the right direction or asking them to take the risk of rescoring.

These are some of the most outdated pieces of guidance a trainer can provide to students after the updates.

Question: Can a student book a second attempt at the exam before they have received the results from their first one?

Answer: Sadly, that is not possible. Unless you don’t get your first test results, you cannot book another exam. Once you have taken the exam, the next exam can only be booked at least after 5 working days.
