Struggling with doubts regarding the reason for poverty in Islam / Why does Allah allow extreme poverty?
I’m making this post because I’ve been experiencing some recurring doubts lately, and I really want to understand the Islamic perspective on this better to find some peace of mind.
Lately, I’ve been deeply bothered by the reality of extreme poverty around the world—especially when it affects innocent children who are starving or born into absolute destitution.
I know the standard answers usually revolve around:
- This life being a test (wealthy people are tested with charity, poor people are tested with patience).
- True justice being in the Akhirah (Hereafter).
- Poverty being a result of human greed and corruption, not a failure of divine distribution (since there is technically enough food on earth for everyone).
But if I'm being completely honest, sometimes these answers feel hard to digest emotionally. When you see the sheer scale of suffering, it’s difficult to reconcile why a Merciful Creator would design a system where some people have to endure such brutal hardship just to survive, while others are born into massive luxury. If everything happens by Allah's will, why is the baseline of the "test" so radically unequal from birth?
Are there any deeper theological explanations, scholarly commentaries, or specific Quranic verses/Hadiths that helped you make sense of this? How do you emotionally and intellectually process the existence of extreme poverty without letting it shake your Iman (faith)?
I’d really appreciate any insights, books, or lectures you could point me toward. Please keep the comments respectful—I am genuinely looking for answers to strengthen my faith, not trying to start an argument.
