Snoozed for 7 years. What finally fixed it was making snoozing hard.

Context:
I could dismiss any alarm without waking up.

I could do that without even looking at my phone. On iPhone I literally know where to tap to snooze.

Missed a flight in oct 2022.

Missed exam at university.

Missed important standup at work every other week.

I have tried everything:

- phone in different room

- 7 alarms

- sleep earlier. (real hard than it sounds)

Nothing worked coz when I am half asleep I find a way out of an alarm.

What worked for me, was two rules:

Rule #1:

The alarm can only end after I do something I can't do from bed.

I tapped a QR code to my kettle and the alarm won't stop until I scan it.

QR part is how I choose to solve it.

The point is the rule has to be completed standing in different room.(not bedroom)

Rule #2:

Snooze is allowed but capped.

One snooze, ten minutes.

I tried zero snooze, I messed up the whole thing in 10 days.

Unlimited is meaningless.

I found one is enough for me and keeps me sane. LOL!

The thing I got wrong for years:

I thought the problem was discipline.

It was that my system was flawed.

The moment there is a cost like getting up, going to another room, walking. The decision is made by me who is awake and not on warm bed.

Loopholes mater more than being hard. Any skip, any way to mute the phone and I would use it.

So whatever you try, try it when you are half sleep not at 7 pm during dinner.

3 months, no overslept mornings.

Curious what other people do to get up in morning. Especially people who figured it out without some special alarm clock or an app.
