Lumence is the last nation on Earth. It exists in our future, but at our past's level of technology.

The robed figures - the women of the Oracular Faith, the Maternal Medical Order, the Odium Dei - they worship a living relic, the Oracle, as much as they seek to protect the world from the evils of a parallel dimension known as the Abyss. They wield such power that they regularly execute members of the royal family for failing their health checks.

They commune directly with the demigod known as the Oracle, a physical entity suspended in a deep sleep underneath the Oracular Cathedral. A progress cult has been built around the Oracle, as He is responsible for giving the Lumentians Old Earth wisdom. All the knowledge of Old Earth that was thought to be lost is now being funneled through Him - architecture, medicine, engineering, the humanities - none of this would exist on Lumence as we know it were it not for the work the Oracle and the cult of progress that surrounds Him.
