Hey r/Questrade — wanted to take a moment to walk through the changes to Questrade Plus. There is a price change, so context feels useful here. 

What’s new in Plus:

• Cashback on US equity options: $0.05 CAD back per contract, on top of commission-free US equity options trading.
• A 1% match on new RRSP contributions.
• First access to Pre-IPO offerings, like Stripe and Polymarket (limited allocations, Plus subscribers get priority)
• Partner perks with MasterClass, The Wall Street Journal, Headway, and more.

What’s staying in Plus: unlimited journaling and real-time market data.

What’s moving out of Plus, into free-for-everyone: Custom Alerts and the P&L calculator. 

Pricing: Plus is free for everyone — new and existing subscribers — until September 30th. Starting October 1st, it’s $19.99+tax/ month. Cancel anytime. 

Is it worth it? 

Depends on how you’d actually use it. For example, if the RRSP match is the only piece that applies to you, the match doesn’t quite work on its own — contributing $10K over the year to a 1% match won’t cover a $20/ month fee. The value shows up when you stack the match against the rest of the bundle: options cashback, the WSJ/MasterClass/ Headway subscriptions, the unlimited journaling. If none of that fits how you invest, it’s probably not worth it for you right now. 

It’s free to try until September 30 though, so you can run the math on your own use case before anything is charged. If there is one benefit that would tip it for you, please tell us in the comments! That’s the kind of feedback that shaped this update.

Last night at our Dialogue Series event here in Vancouver, we got to share something with the room that I want to share with all of you too: Questrade’s Custom Indexing is officially live.

It’s the first product of its kind in Canada, and is one of the releases you told us you were most excited for when we announced it at The Dawn of Investing.

And I get why. There's a trade-off so many investors are forced to make: do you take the control of picking stocks, or the ease of all-in-one ETFs to build your portfolio.

We don't think that should exist.

Everything we're building is to break the trade offs across time, control and outcomes. We fundamentally believe in empowering self-directed Canadians, not taking agency away from them to just make it simpler. Custom Indexing is one of our first steps towards our product vision for empowered Canadians, and now, it's here.

Custom Indexing lets you take a basic index, like the S&P 500, and turn it into a portfolio that matches your exact strategy. Every holding is yours to fine tune, from stocks to sectors. 

What I am really excited about is how this product can support diverse investing and trading strategies. It serves as a platform for you whether you want to invest thematically, are more into factor investing, or are looking to fine tune diversified long-term investing. Our team is working hard on delivering additional features quickly to make these possibilities more accessible.

I’ve already built a few myself, including one I’ve called The Barbell, an index that reimagines how a balanced portfolio works: stability on one end, high-volatility growth on the other. It reweights the S&P 500 by kicking out the middle (344 of them!)—the stocks that are neither meaningfully steady nor meaningfully volatile—and focuses on the two extremes. The logic is that steady stocks protect your downside and deliver consistent yield while volatile stocks amplify your upside.

So many of you have told us this is the kind of control you enjoy no matter where you are on your investing journey. You’re not in it for one-size-fits-all solutions. You believe, like we do, that the process and the effort is what makes exceptional outcomes possible.

And we’ve made sure the optimizing isn’t tedious.

Custom Indexing also comes with built-in drift notifications (for rebalancing). When your portfolio drifts 10% from the targets you set for it, you’ll get a notification. 

Then, with just one click, you can rebalance the entire portfolio to bring it back in sync with your targets—whether that means moving 6 stocks or 600.

All of this happens with no trading commissions and zero management fees. 

That last bit is important. Sometimes management fees may look small at first glance, but they still add up—the bigger your investment, the more you pay.

A few of your raised some good points in our post last night, and I want to speak to some of them here:

• How does Custom Indexing affect ACB? Fair concern. It's been a priority from the start. We'll have features that simplify ACB calculation and tax reporting before the next tax season, and are also exploring how to make tax filing easier in general.
• Why can I only customize with US securities? We hear you. This is on our roadmap and we’ll have more to share very soon. Our current target is to have Canadian securities supported by Canada Day 🇨🇦 and other asset classes after that.

I can’t wait to hear about the indices you all create. Money is personal. Investing is, too. Now your portfolio can finally reflect that—without compromising control, ease, or having to pay fees.
