Orange discoloration on sole edge / welt of 2-month-old Presidents – normal?

Orange discoloration on sole edge / welt of 2-month-old Presidents – normal?

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice or insight on my Thursday President boots in black.

I’ve had them for about 2 months, wearing them into the office a few days a week. I noticed this distinct orange/light brown line showing up along the edge of the welt/sole (see attached photo). It’s starting to appear in a few spots around the perimeter.

If it's just the edge finish coming off, what’s the best product to restore the clean black edge (e.g., Fiebing’s Edge Dressing, black shoe cream, wax)?

Appreciate any tips or product recommendations!

Stuck between sizes on my first pair of Presidents (11.5W vs 12W with Custom Orthotics + Canada shipping pain)

Hey everyone,

I’m pulling my hair out trying to figure out the right fit for my first pair of Thursday boots (Presidents) and could really use some collective wisdom.

I wear a size 12W in standard dress shoes, runners, and hiking boots. I also have a pair of 15-year-old Doc Martens in an 11.5, though I know Docs tend to run pretty large and roomy.

Here is the breakdown of my journey so far:

The Constraint: I have to wear $300 custom orthopedic insoles. Swapping them out for a cheap, thick Amazon insole or standard foam insert isn't an option for me.

Round 1 (11.5 Wide): Lengthwise, they felt great with my orthotics in. However, they were incredibly tight across the bridge/instep of my foot. I wore them around the house for a few days, but after researching and talking to Thursday support, I realized the leather wouldn't stretch enough over the top to fix that pressure.

The Canadian Tax: TBC support recommended returning them for a 12W. Because I'm in Canada, that return shipping hit me for just under $100 CAD. Ouch.

Round 2 (12 Wide): Got them in, and now they feel too big. There is a 1.5 thumb-width gap between my toes and the tip of the boot. My feet slide around just a little bit, and they are noticeably loose in the ankle.

So now I’m stuck. The 11.5W squeezed the top of my foot too much, but the 12W feels loose, especially around the ankles. Given that another return/exchange is going to cost me another bill from Canada Post, I want to make the right call.

Has anyone dealt with a high instep/bridge issue on the President?

Does the ankle/heel area tighten up significantly as the leather breaks in and molds, or is a 1.5-thumb gap a definitive sign that the boot is just too long?

Should I look into tongue pads or heel grips to save the 12W, or is this particular last just a bad match for my foot shape and custom orthotics?

Any suggestions or advice from fellow wide-footers or orthotic-wearers would be greatly appreciated!
