32 | Cleaning Up a Bloated 11-Fund Mutual Fund Portfolio | Need Portfolio Review & Strategy Critique
Hi everyone,
I am a 32-year-old tech professional looking to streamline my long-term investment strategy. My accumulated Indian Mutual Fund corpus is ~₹77 Lakhs (split into ~₹60.8 Lakhs in Equity MFs and ~₹16.2 Lakhs in Hybrid/Debt/Gold MFs).
My current monthly investment capacity into domestic MFs is ₹3.2 Lakhs/month, which I am scaling up to ₹3.8 Lakhs/month.
While my broader asset allocation is intact, my biggest immediate bottleneck is a bloated, overlapping 11-fund mutual fund portfolio built over years of incremental additions.
Mandatory Context & Investor Profile
- Investment Horizon: Long-term (10+ Years).
- Risk Tolerance / Profile: Moderately Aggressive (comfortable with short-term market volatility and drawdowns, given strong cash flows and defensive buffers).
- Goal: Portfolio consolidation, removing asset overlaps, and optimizing cost/expense ratios for long-term wealth compounding.
Current Mutual Fund Portfolio Breakdown (₹77 Lakhs Corpus | ₹3.2L/Month SIP)
| Category | Fund Name | Current Monthly SIP |
|---|---|---|
| Large Cap | SBI Large Cap Fund | ₹20,000 |
| ICICI Prudential Bluechip Fund | ₹20,000 | |
| Large & Mid Cap | ICICI Prudential Large & Mid Cap Fund | ₹30,000 |
| Flexi Cap | Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund | ₹40,000 |
| HDFC Flexi Cap Fund | ₹30,000 | |
| Mid Cap | HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund | ₹40,000 |
| Quant Mid Cap Fund | ₹10,000 | |
| Small Cap | Canara Robeco Small Cap Fund | ₹20,000 |
| Nippon India Small Cap Fund | ₹10,000 | |
| Balanced Advantage | HDFC Balanced Advantage Fund | ₹30,000 |
| Precious Metals | ICICI Prudential Gold MF | ₹50,000 |
| ICICI Silver ETF FoF | ₹20,000 | |
| TOTAL | 11 Funds | ₹3,20,000 / month |
The Restructuring Proposal (Scaling SIP to ₹3.8L/Month)
My goal is to prune this down to 6–7 high-conviction core funds for all fresh SIP deployments.
Here is my working thesis:
- Stop Active Large Caps & Large-and-Mid Caps: Active Large Cap funds struggle to beat benchmarks, and Flexi Cap managers already allocate 50%+ to top blue chips.
- Consolidate Small Caps: Nippon Small Cap’s AUM is massive (₹55,000+ Cr), making agility difficult. I am considering shifting fresh small-cap flows into 1-2 single, lower-AUM quality fund(or if community has different opinion).
- Maintain Strong Defensive Tilt: Keep ~25–30% of fresh SIPs in Precious Metals (Gold/Silver) + Balanced Advantage to cushion market volatility over a 2–3 year horizon.
- Handling Accumulated Units: Leave the existing ~₹77L units untouched in stopped funds so they compound undisturbed without triggering premature LTCG tax.
- Proposed Monthly SIP Distribution Table:
| Category | Proposed Fund / Asset | Proposed Monthly SIP |
|---|---|---|
| Flexi Cap | Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund | ₹60,000 |
| HDFC Flexi Cap Fund | ₹40,000 | |
| Mid Cap | HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund | ₹45,000 |
| Quant Mid Cap Fund | ₹15,000 | |
| Small Cap | Small Cap Fund (Consolidated / TBD) | ₹30,000 |
| Balanced Advantage | HDFC Balanced Advantage Fund | ₹40,000 |
| Precious Metals | ICICI Prudential Gold MF | ₹50,000 |
| ICICI Silver ETF FoF | ₹20,000 | |
| Global Equity | VWRA (via IBKR) | ₹50,000 |
| TOTAL | ₹3,80,000 / month |
Questions for the Community
- Flexi Caps vs. Index Anchor: Does stopping active large-cap SIPs completely in favor of two complementary Flexi Caps (e.g., PPFC + HDFC) make sense, or should I hold a low-cost Nifty 50 Index fund as an explicit anchor?
- Managing Mega-AUM Small Caps: How are you handling small-cap funds with massive AUMs? Is it better to stick with established giant funds or move fresh capital into disciplined, smaller-AUM funds?
- Defensive Allocation: Is allocating ~30% of fresh monthly SIPs into Precious Metals + BAF prudent for downside protection, or is it overly conservative given my existing ₹16.2L in debt/defensive MFs? Context: While I have ₹16.2L in debt/defensive MFs, my overall global net worth (~₹5.1 Crores) is heavily equity-dominated (~72%+ in domestic and foreign equity combined vs. ~28% in fixed income/EPF/FDs). Thus, the higher defensive tilt in fresh SIPs is intended to gradually rebalance the macro portfolio.
- Cleanup Mechanics: Is letting stopped funds compound undisturbed the standard approach, or do you systematically harvest LTCG up to the annual tax-free limit to consolidate into core funds?
Appreciate all perspectives, critiques, and insights!
