Thyroidectomy

I just had the right side of my thyroid removed, because of a 3cm mass. This was a week ago. They couldn't determine if it was cancerous with FNA, so I am waiting for the final results on the mass. My doctor said if it is cancerous the next step would be to remove the other half. From what I've researched and read it is a small chance of cancer occurring on the half that wasn't removed. I'm just worried about removing my entire thyroid, especially after reading about symptoms and how your body adjusts to no thyroid. I have depression, which is now under control, but I've read/heard that that can worsen after thyroid removal. I know thyroid medication isn't that complicated. Has anyone decided to leave the other half even after cancer on the removed half? Do you have any pointers or advice? Thank you!
