Patron Deck design update...

Hopefully not too spammy. I took ya'lls suggestions and a couple of ideas I had floating around. Now the card is two-sided. A "player" side that gives the basics of the job and a GM's side to generate (or pick) any complications and rewards.

I did the rewards like the "benefits" in Mgt2e character creation to give a good spread for negotiation and a little bit to drive the overall narrative (like KCr2; Patron short...you get stiffed on whatever was agreed to, essentially. Or however the GM interprets).

Anyway. Pressing forward with this format. Feedback welcome!

Working on a new thing... patron cards

I'm always looking for ways to be more spontaneous in reaction to player actions/activities. 76 Patrons is one of my favorite resources for this -- especially the subtle connections across them. I think cards would be a good resource for this. Similar to the encounter cards in the 4e version of Twilight 2000. It's like: here's a thing, GM. Go.

Bounty Hunter Tickets PDF

Hey ya'll -- here's a form-fillable PDF for bounty hunter tickets (and a plain PDF), along with the python scripts Claude used to make them. I don't like using Claude, but I'm trying to learn the form-fillable thing and that helped with rapid prototyping.

The fields are directly from the 2e bounty hunter book.

(Also, if you haven't read it, I got the idea from Sir Poley's excellent blog: https://sirpoley.tumblr.com/post/623997673833480192/on-the-four-table-legs-of-traveller-leg-2 )

These two player's journals are now available at Drivethru in two different versions -- the lay-flat wire-bound version (which I personally prefer) and a softback version. Both are digest sized and both include a pdf with the physical book.

Thanks for ya'lls support so far. Off to finish working on a GM's journal.

More info on both here (along with previews): https://www.mysticbull.com/post/traveller-and-paperwork-and-journals

Just finished the first Man-Kzin Wars book. If you're not familiar, it's a series of books from the 80s set in Niven's Known Space universe, but the stories are written by other authors (generally), and they have a decidedly military sci-fi bent. Niven has a short story to kick it off, then we have a Poul Anderson novella and a Dean Ing novella.

Both are firmly rooted in hard science fiction, but I have to say Anderson's was such a great Traveller story. Science team led by what are essentially mustered out scouts with an ancient, detached-service ship go to a remote system to do some surveying and find the Kzin - whom the humans had recently been at war with (Aslan for all practical purposes). There's a scramble of conflict that the humans science-the-shit out of.

Ing's story was very good, but felt more like a hearkening back to "solo-man-hero" stories of early sci-fi. There was way more interaction with the Kzin in this one. I'm not familiar enough with Niven's Known Space stuff to say if the story was revealing about the Kzin and their distant past, but I really enjoyed this one. The "zoo planet" in particular I could see fitting right into a campaign. There's also that old-school sci-fi tendency of the hero to want to bang whatever alien is there. But, maybe that's just the monkey-human tendency. Either way, not quite as "furry" as Stone God Awakens by Philip José Farmer.

For Traveller applicability, I'd give Anderson's story a 9+. Ing's an 8+.

I'm interested in running a campaign that's more exploration and science-based. It feels like the standard approaches to the universe are transactional and financial-based.

How could you incent the players/characters, without money, to go out into dangerous, unexplored territory on a scientific mission? SOC growth for discoveries/publishing? Just the thrill of high adventures in science?

I don't have anything exciting to report. I'm just always happy when I'm running/playing Traveller. At the local boardgame convention, I ran a con adventure I developed where the travellers are hired by an Imperium naval intelligence commander to help a noblewoman obtain her family heirloom from a cousin in the Mire system, and then steal it!

I had a full table signed up, but only one player showed up. Instead of using the pregens, we walked through Mongoose 2e character creation. That ended up attracting another player, so we jumped right into the adventure.

Very tight 2-hour session -- about half of which was pure roleplay/investigation, and the second half action/combat. Both players seemed pretty happy about it. Love this game.

Hey ya'll -- You may have seen it in previous posts, but I have released two journal-books targeted to two "campaign types" -- the space bum/traveller and the scout. The first one focuses on contacts, places, and patrons and the latter on exploration, ship /sector /subsector /system /world. Both have a simple character sheet, a psionics record, and 26 weeks of open journal space. Both are wire-bound/lay flat and digest-sized. Pre-order gets you the PDFs immediately. ETA for book delivery is May 16th.

Still working in the Space Trader's Ledger and the GM's version of all of these. Hopefully they'll be useful at your table.

Anyway -- more details here.
