Uhlmann Alternative

Now that Uhlmann has gone out of business, I want to figure out alternate jacket/knickers brand since I will need some new ones soon. Anyone have recommendations on other brands/lines that fit similarly to Uhlmann for mens whites?

Privateer New England Reserve alternative?

Hey rum friends!

I recently tried Privateer New England Reserve rum and kinda fell in love with it a bit. The catch is that it's not easy to source in Oregon where I live. Any recommendations on similar rums I should check out to scratch the same itch? Thanks in advance.

PT with fencing experience in Portland, OR?

Hey fellow fencers,

Anyone here know of a good physical therapist in Portland, OR who has experience treating competitive fencers? I have some rehabbing to do and I'm hoping to find someone to help who understands the demands and quirks of our sport. Thanks!

Kiddo's first real sleeping bag?

My daughter (8y, 53" tall) has outgrown her little kid sleeping bag and I'm looking to replace it for her. I'm inclined to get her a decent adult sleeping bag that she will grow into and will be able to keep into adulthood. We mostly car camp, spring-early fall in OR. I'm thinking something rated to 20ish degrees (that's what I use) and I'd like to stay under $130ish if possible.

Any recommendations?

Lime juice for daiquiris and mai tais

Obviously fresh squeezed is the best, but I don't always have limes on hand and I've been trying to work out the best alternative that I can keep around long-term and use whenever the mood strikes. So far I've tried RealLime, Nellie & Joe's key lime juice, and Rose's sweetened lime, and none of them has hit quite right. I don't really want to get into the work and special ingredients to make superjuice.

Anyone have suggestions on long(ish)-term fridge-stable (even after opening) lime juice that's closer to fresh squeezed? Or maybe it's just a matter of reducing the volume by a certain percent or mixing juices or something?

Thanks in advance!

My tiki shame

I love tiki drinks, but i have yet to master a proper mai tai that meets my standards. A friend of mine made a monkeypod copycat recipe recently or it was outstanding, so i tried to replicate that (approximately) and mine was nowhere near as good. Here was the spec of my latest attempt. Please help me!

1 oz cruzan light rum

Juice of one fresh lime

.5 oz dekuyper orange cuatacao

.75 oz holy kakow mac nut syrup

1 oz coruba

This was pretty close to my friend's spec in principle except that she used kula light and dark rums and i used what i had on hand. To be clear, i know cruzan isn't the best but I'm trying to kill a bottle of it so i can replace it with some planteray 3 star.

I would love to know what y'all think I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. Thanks!

Rum for Corn 'N Oil

If you had to pick between Doorly's XO and Mount Gay Black Barrel for a corn 'n oil, which would it be and why?

Well oiled mai tai question

Curious if people have strong opinions about the rum(s) that go into a well oiled mai tai.

My inclination is to stick to 2 ounces of a Barbados rum like Mount Gay Black Barrel or Doorly's XO because that's in line with the corn 'n oil aspect of the drink, but I wonder if it wouldn't bring things a little closer to mai tai to mix that 75/25 or even 50/50 with something Jamaican like Smith & Cross.

Would love advice from folks who have maybe done this experimentation before me.

Bunka recommendation please

I'm interested in getting my first bunka. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • ~170mm length
  • Taller profile
  • K-tip for detail work
  • Thinking SG2 or Ginsan but open to other options - I want to minimize daily care requirements and maximize edge retention
  • Needs to be sturdy/forgiving enough for family members with less knife skills to use without hurting themselves or the knife
  • I do not want a laser
  • Ideally has more rustic/forged aesthetics (kurouchi / nashiji finish)
  • Bonus points for either a western handle shape or a wa handle with rounder cross section and smoother finish
  • I'd like to stay under $300 if I can

Thanks so much and I'm excited to see what y'all suggest!

Smell-alike for Gilchrist & Soames Warm Oak

Hey gang,

I recently stayed at a hotel that had this line of body wash / shampoo / conditioner and I fell in love with the scent. The listed notes are grapefruit, coriander, and oud, but the scent itself was just warm and slightly woody (in a soft cozy way) without too much sweetness, citrus, or herbal quality to it.

I'd love to find a fragrance that smells just like this (or as close as possible). Anyone have suggestions?
