The Depleted Forest at Durgeth's Core Custom Terrain Expansion

I shall present you... The Depleted Forest at Durgeth's Core (well, well, the name is pending, yeah?). For anyone interested, I put the models available for free in Cults3D (following the licenses in the originals), even though this is just a remix of the Terrain4Print tree trunks and the single-hex object base.

If you want an easy to print forest, this can do. They occupy a less visual space than the trees of the Road to the Forgotten Forest (RttFF), but should give you a different aesthetic, in case you are looking to spice up your terrain.

I think these look better in swamp, hence why I came up with the name. Also, the Durgeth Swamp was ravaged in the journey to the wellspring of the region, so a depleted forest in swamp terrain seems more thematic. However, I think the rules for the RttFF should apply (for powers like Through the Green of the C3V Eilan Sidhe, even though tree trunks are not exactly green...).

Anyway, feel free to print and use if you like them :D.

BTW, if anyone can conjure up a better name for this tree trunk collection, feel welcome to let me know.

Laur's Edge vs Ticalla Jungle

I got my hands on a Ticalla Jungle, so now I can compare the trees with the Age of Annihilation ones and document (as I did not find this elsewhere).

In short: Laur trees and Ticalla trees (and underbushes) are different and easy to tell apart. Different hue of green, different vegetation, different style.

In all the pictures on this post, Laur trees are on the left, while Ticalla trees are on the right.

Differences:

  • Laur has a colder green against the warmer Ticalla green.
  • Laur trees and underbushes have a cactus-like vegetation, while Ticalla ones have tall grass.
  • Laur tree cups seem more flat, and have a sided assembly (a flat side) vs a round assembly on the Ticalla cups (and a little more volume or "curviness").
  • Laur trees have a liana that kinda hides the bambu-like segments more visible on the Ticalla trees.

In all, I can mix the two sets and easily separate them later due to the green hue, lower vegetation, and trunk and cup structure.

As a side note: I got me some Laur trees where the serial code had a trailing 2, so I avoided the ones with a manufacturing defect (read about it only). All trees work as intended for me.

Tips to paint new Knights of Weston shield? Just buy painted?

I have been looking thru the paint guides for the Nastra's Nightmare units, to decide whether I want to paint them myself or just buy painted.

I went like:

  • Zetacron, sure, looks doable.
  • The students, yes, I can do that.
  • The riders... sure, sure.
  • Knight... HOW ON EARTH WILL I PAINT THAT SHIELD?
  • REALLY? SIR GILBERT'S FLAG?

So, while the Knights of Weston are probably the squad I want several boxes of, and price-wise is three unpainted boxes for the price of two painted ones... how does one paint the shield? Is that supposed to be painted? No sticker or magic trick? D:

Paint job looks even less doable for me on Sir Gilbert's flag.

I looked at my classical Sir Gilbert's flag, and I do not see texture with the pattern, or stickers with the drawing.

For those painters out there, is this doable? If so, any tutorial recommendation? Or the recommendation is to just buy painted? XD

NOTE: All images belong to Renegade and are distributed as part of their paint guides.

With Renegade bringing some old Heroscape back, how do you guys feel?

I just joined the ranks of Heroscape this year, and quickly started to grab everything I could get, from old and new alike.

One of the old figures I got in an eBay auction was Sir Gilbert... not exactly a cheap fella. Today Renegade announced his return as part of Contemporary Heroscape, along with dice and Alastair, for cheaper I bought the flag bearer for.

Another one of the units to be brought back are the Knights of Weston. Still haven't bought any (old or new) and I want a lot of them for my Medieval Zombie Showdown For All Mankind (name in the works). But my mind as a collector now wonders: should I stick to buy only new units, leaving my old Heroscape incomplete?

Currently, I have some Wave 2 units, like Sir Denrick (part of the showdown) and Me-Burq-Sa (because, Marro), but will my mind allow me to have a hole in my collection for having only the new Knights of Weston? But, of course, I am forgetting they will be including a NEW card and an OLD card, so I can effectively have both version by just buying the new.

And, that is even more important talking about Crest of the Valkyrie and Aquilla's Alliance: Sir Gilbert and Zetacron will be a fraction of what they cost in the second-hand market for the old 'scape.

I think I will not buy any other old flag bearer, nor a big creature from Aquilla's Alliance, but I am unsure if I want to buy another new Alastair MacDick or Sir Gilbert (as I have those in old scape... but then I would have a lack of card for the new collection...).

Ugh.

I mean, I have Sivarrys ROTV and Sivarrys AOA... and Raelin ROTV and Raelin SOTM and Raelin AOA and Raelin BT... but those are different versions of the same character with different powers.

This... this is something different, where the new units and squads are cheaper, and fill the holes in both new and old 'scape.

I don't think I'll buy the new Allistair or Sir Gilbert... at least until I get more old 'scape units that are not duplicates.

The MacDirk warriors, yeah, those are common, and will be cheaper as they come with two squads per box.

But those Knights of Weston... I just hope Atomic Empire or All Things Heroscape put those boxes in a price that is more palatable than Renegade's, and I will have at least two of those boxes in my cart.

EDIT: Of course, there is no guarantee that Renegade will bring back more old units, or the full of the flag bearers or Aquilla's Alliance, but I have plenty of more of old 'scape and the Age of Annihilation to buy while waiting for the next launch.

20x30in Grass Foamboard

A follow-up to my water foamboard for Heroscape: the grass foamboard, with images from the Heroscapers Forum.

Same process: take image, resize and test print, then print several to cover the 20x30 foamcore. This board can fit the scenario "Trollsford Swamps Battlefield" from the Rise of the Valkyrie master set.

Working on another foamboard with road tiles...

"Planeswalker" foamboard for Heroscape

So... I wanted to have a map ready if a friend dropped by, to say "Wanna play a fast Heroscape game?"

I recalled watching some cheap foamboard of 20x30 inches in Dollar Tree. That is how it started.

I assembled one map on my new "toy", two halves divided by a river, but I assembled both separated... only to realize I made them with different orientations when trying to join them.

I thought "well, I could print some grid and paste it in the foamboard". That's when I recalled the "Arena of the Planeswalker," with printed stuff and cardboard, rather than plastic tiles.

And so I went to BGG, found a file for a lake, and printed that thing repeated over a big sheet. Then pasted that all over the 20x30" foamboard.

Now I can prepare and store small scenarios like "The Wellspring's Woe" from the Battle Box, and make it leave the table in less than one minute.

As some other people use foamboard or plywood, what else have you done to improve Heroscape setup or experience? :o

EDIT:

Got my edited file approved at BGG, in case you want to use it:

https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/323547/water-grid-in-13x19-paper-for-foamboard

I can print in 13x19, but should work to print in smaller sheets by cropping.

"Heroscape: The Army Painter Starter Set" Army Painter Names Chart

I previously stumbled upon the Heroscape Age of Annihilation Paint Set Name Chart, but I could not find the same resource for the Heroscape: The Army Painter Starter Set (and was previously asked here in reddit).

I reached out to Army Painter and they let me know that the colors that come in the kit are the ones in the table attached to this post.

For those seeking out to buy new paints, there are three things I can point out:

  • The overlap between the "Heroscape 10-Set" and the "Heroscape 20-Set" is only two paints: Matt Black and Carnelian Skin ("Bat Wing").

  • The overlap between the "Heroscape 20-Set" and the "Warpaints Fanatics 50" is of ten paints, listed on image.

  • The overlap between the "Heroscape 10-Set" and the "Warpaints Fanatics 50" is of two paints: Matt Black and Dark Tone Wash.

So, if you get or have the Warpaint Fanatics 50, is better to buy the missing paints from the Heroscape 20-Set, but the Heroscape Starter might be worth it over the Burrower figure alone.

New to Heroscape! (And painting minis...)

Hello!

I am new to Heroscape (my first purchase ever was Maladrix at the May 5th Deal of the Day in GameNerdz). Since then, I went down the rabbit hole.

Since I could not play with Maladrix alone due to lack of everything else, I decided to get the Battle for the Wellspring Battle Box.

After seeign the prices for painted and unpainted, the question was "Well... I can buy two packs of unpainted stuff and paint them, or buy one pack of something".

And so, I was a man on a mission: to figure out if I enjoyed painting enough to get a lot of unpainted minis then paint them myself, or just get less units that I wanted to play with that came already painted.

Here are my first two miniatures ever painted: Kita and Onshu.

As a note, they were painted with DecoArt craft paints I had lying around, as the Heroscape Army Painter Set is also on evaluation depending on if I like painting enough...

... And, after painting what the YouTubers I followed called "the easiest to paint", I am unsure if I want to continue down this road, seeing the quality of my work is... well, see it for yourself. If these two were the easiest... am I patient enough to continue? Skilled enough? Did I enjoy it?

What stick out the most to me is the base. God, I want the brown color of the base that comes in that kit (I guess it is included, maybe the "Leather Brown"?).

(Yeah, while waiting for the Battle Box I bought some old stuff, including the Sahuagin Rider.. you know, to compare how my painting fares against prepainted originals)

Hey, guys,

More than publishing the discounted price on the "Heroscape: Rising Tide - Queen Maladrix & Festering Honor Guard - Army Expansion" at $24.97 on GameNerdz, I want to ask: who owns this game (not this set, any master set or battle set, or whatever needed to play since inception)? How is it?

I have read about it, that it is a skirmish game for two, that it got out of print for a while but on 2024 got back with "Age of Annihilation" from the hand of Renegade Games.

So far, I had been kept out of it as the BGG entry says this game has "Extensive use of text - massive conversion needed to be playable", and there is no Spanish version of it (that is, I can read the minis powers, but the people I play with cannot). After reading the rule book, seems there is a "basic" version, which only takes into consideration some basic stats and there are no powers that would need translation to enjoy the game.

So, for those who have it: do you recommend it? And, more than that, is my assumption of the basic mode being language independent correct or not?

By the way, here is the link, valid for today:
