For a C-II hardcopy that is electronically printed with all else being accurate, is the electronic printed date sufficient? Or does the provider need to handwrite the date (in addition to their signature)?

Context: System outage. Prescriber gives patient a C2 hardcopy that is SIGNED but no handwritten date. The date is, however, printed on the valid electronic hardcopy.

I was under the impression that if an exception applies allowing a paper prescription (e.g., system outages or temporary technological failures), the date can be pre-printed or computer-generated by the software system under 21 CFR § 1306.05(d) and California health safety exemptions. However, the prescriber must still manually provide a physical, "wet" signature in ink onto that printed form before it is legally valid.

SECONDLY, does this change if the question is applied specifically for California? How about other states?

Thanks!
