How did people deal with HH in the past?

So I'm in my 20s, and have been dealing with excessive sweating ever since I first hit puberty. It's mostly genetic, and it's worsened by SSRIs that I have to take.

Summer is coming up and I'm struggling to find clothing that allows me to remain comfortable without showing too much sweat or making it worse. So far, all I've seen is people saying to wear natural fibres like cotton and linen in light colours for breathability OR polyester and other synthetic fibres in black that don't show sweat stains. It's frankly exhausting and anxiety inducing.

This led me to wonder: how did people deal with excessive sweating historically? Sure, clothes were made with natural fibres that were more breathable, but (at least in Europe) clothing was often layered and covered most of the body. How did they deal with the sweat? Is it just undergarments that protect the outer layers from showing stains? Wouldn't that have worsened the sweating though?

I'm genuinely curious because I feel like most modern affordable clothing simply is not made with the person wearing it in mind, so I have to look to the past for solutions.

I'm also open to suggestions for clothing options! Thank you all in advance.
