How did people deal with HH in the past?

So I'm in my 20s, and have been dealing with excessive sweating ever since I first hit puberty. It's mostly genetic, and it's worsened by SSRIs that I have to take.

Summer is coming up and I'm struggling to find clothing that allows me to remain comfortable without showing too much sweat or making it worse. So far, all I've seen is people saying to wear natural fibres like cotton and linen in light colours for breathability OR polyester and other synthetic fibres in black that don't show sweat stains. It's frankly exhausting and anxiety inducing.

This led me to wonder: how did people deal with excessive sweating historically? Sure, clothes were made with natural fibres that were more breathable, but (at least in Europe) clothing was often layered and covered most of the body. How did they deal with the sweat? Is it just undergarments that protect the outer layers from showing stains? Wouldn't that have worsened the sweating though?

I'm genuinely curious because I feel like most modern affordable clothing simply is not made with the person wearing it in mind, so I have to look to the past for solutions.

I'm also open to suggestions for clothing options! Thank you all in advance.

Long hair and sleeping

I am a 20 year-old female and I have had hyperhydrosis since i hit puberty at 12 years old.
It has always been extremely humiliating but I used avenues like school, PE class, gym training and working in fitness companies to get access to extra showers/ extra opportunities to shower.

At the moment I’ve had surgery on my kidneys so I’m unable to leave the house and go to the gym et cetera during my recovery.

I live with my parents and their water doesn’t work properly. From my hyperhydrosis I need at least 2-3 showers per day and my hair needs washed everyday. The only way I’m able to do this at my parents because of the heating and the way their Water works, is in the evening time before I go to bed.

Every single morning, I have literally been waking up with wet hair. I dry my hair before I go to sleep after I’ve washed it. I have woke up with sweat, literally beaming down my forehead and with my hair stuck in it.

cutting my hair short is not an option. I feel like if I wore a bonnet I would sweat even more and my hair would be even wetter.

Are there any fellow sweaty ladies or anyone that’s experienced something similar that could point me in the right direction or recommend something that could help?

I already sleep naked and with one blanket and a fan

My physical therapist literally saved my sleep by asking one stupid question about my bed

honestly i was seeing a PT for my shoulder and we got talking about my awful sleep because i wake up drenched every single night and he asked if my bed felt like a literal heatsink. i told him i always have the AC on low but he explained that if your setup doesn't actively move the heat away it just traps a pocket of hot air right around you. as someone who has always been one of those incredibly hot and sweaty sleepers, i finally stopped looking at medical fixes for a second and tried upgrading to those cooling type of sheets everyone talks about on reddit.

i was skeptical because i've tried everything but wow it actually made a massive difference this week. i’m not saying it cures HH completely during the day obviously but waking up dry for the first time in months is wild. has anyone else found that changing the airflow of their bed setup did more than actual medication?

After a lifetime of dripping sweat, I found total dryness in just 8 days. The best investment of my life.

Hey everyone,

I am writing this because I honestly still can’t believe it myself. If you are someone who struggles with severe palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the hands and feet), you know exactly how deeply it affects your quality of life.

For as long as I can remember, I literally never knew what it felt like to have a truly dry hand. My palms and feet were constantly dripping. It didn't matter if I was cold, relaxed, or sitting in an air-conditioned room—the sweat just wouldn't stop. It destroyed my confidence. Simple things like using a touchscreen phone, typing on a laptop, or ruining papers just by touching them were a daily frustration. And the social anxiety? Shaking hands with someone was an absolute nightmare. I spent years constantly wiping my hands on my jeans, feeling trapped by my own body.

After doing a ton of research on this sub and online, I finally decided to bite the bullet and invest in an iontophoresis device. I’ll admit, I was incredibly skeptical at first. The machines are a significant financial commitment, and I was terrified of wasting my money on something that wouldn't work.

Most of the reviews and timelines I read online warned me to be patient, stating that it usually takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks of consistent, daily sessions to see real results. I prepared myself for a long, slow process.

But what happened next felt like a total miracle: It took just 8 days.

By the eighth day of doing my daily treatments, the sweat completely stopped. I woke up, looked at my hands, and felt absolute, total dryness for the very first time in my entire existence. My feet were completely dry too. My skin felt normal, smooth, and comfortable. I couldn't believe how perfectly and rapidly my body responded to the therapy.

If you are reading this and you are on the fence about spending the money on an iontophoresis machine, please take this as your sign to just go for it. It is a serious investment, but it is the single best investment I have ever made in my life. It didn't just fix a medical issue; it gave me my confidence and my freedom back. No more wiping my hands before a greeting, no more slipping in my shoes.

My only regret is that I didn't buy it years ago.

If anyone has any questions about my routine or the experience, feel free to ask in the comments. I'd love to help anyone who is going through the same struggle!

Tell me I’m not alone…

I’m an attractive woman in my early 30s, yet I’m insecure about my condition when it comes to intimacy with my partner because I feel gross, it’s overstimulating, etc due to the sweating - that’s literally the only reason there’s any insecurity. Am I just stuck in my head too much? Does he even care the way I think he does?

This condition steals so many moments, and I wish more people understood that. My confidence would be in such a different place if I wasn’t constantly navigating/hiding it. I find myself avoiding intimacy during the day because the sweating is worse versus the night/morning.

Just trying to figure out if I need to get out of my head… or if maybe I should be in it. lol

Cranial HH friends, what OC treatments do you like to use for scalp specifically?

I've only recently found out I've been dealing with cranial HH my whole life. It's always been this big issue for me since I was about 8? I'm 32 now.

I have long, dark, thick stranded hair. It hasn't always been long, I've had it short a lot in life and it makes no difference! I look like I've come out of a shower as soon as I do anything vigorous, stressful, or fun. Summer is like purgatory.

What do you use for your scalp? I have the face sweat too but I plan on trying a few different OC brands. I haven't noticed a lot of items to use on the scalp yet- maybe I'm just not looking hard enough? Or do I have to just get a script?

Also! Build up. How often are you having to scrub the living crap out of your neck face and scalp?

cutting caffeine reduced my sweating alot

I used to drink like 6 cups of coffee a day. Ive not been diagnosed with HH but im pretty certain I have it.

Its been 3 weeks since I cut caffeine. I noticed that 20ish minutes after drinking coffee I would start to sweat like I just started working out and decided to give this a try.

Any of you tried this and how has it been for you?

What triggers hyperhidrosis the most?(Early survey insights)

Hi, I’m running a short anonymous survey on hyperhidrosis to understand common triggers and real experiences.

From early responses, the most commonly reported triggers are:

Heat / temperature changes

Anxiety or nervousness

Stress in social situations

And on the other hand many people report no specific trigger

I’m still collecting data to get a clearer pattern across more people.

If you have hyperhidrosis, you can fill it here (anonymous):

I’ll share a summary of the findings once I collect more responses. Thanks!

I KNOW I'm sweaty

It's my turn to complain about it. Bear with me.

Three people. Three entire ass people have told me I am very sweaty today and I have been here 4 hours. I know that!!! How could I not!!! IT'S DRIPPING DOWN MY NECK AND FACE.

I understand that sometimes people are just concerned. I have rosacea as well, so I get a very red face while I am sweating profusely. It looks pretty bad.

I know they're not trying to hurt my feelings. But God *damn* dude. What am I even expected to say? I'm an open book so it's not like I am uncomfortable sharing that it's a medical problem, but it just gets irritating.

Plus... I'm obese. People will assume the craziest things about you when your fat and don't even say anything about it. Can't you just assume I'm sweaty *because* I'm fat? 😭 why bring it up? If I were a pettier person I'd start open mouth sobbing when people say anything just to torture them

I'm just tired of it. Can we please stop telling people they're sweaty? Im actually begging

Dermadry

Hello! Anyone here using Dermadry can give me some insights? I’ve been thinking about this machine and wondering about its effectiveness. I’ve been dealing with sweaty hands, armpits, and feet my whole life. For the price, I’m kind of worried if it’s worth it. I know they have a satisfaction guarantee but I’m not looking forward to going through the hassle of returning it if it’s not working. (I am currently going through a second round of chemo and with a baby and about to go back to work, so I don’t want another thing to worry about returning). If you have other suggestions for machines please let me know as well. I wish there is something more affordable right now. But with me going through treatment, I am worried that I am “leaking” chemo through my hands and touching my baby. :( I really want to find a solution. Thank you.

Antihydral safe for long term?

Long term Antihydral users, is it actually safe?

Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with palmar hyperhidrosis for a while and I’m considering starting Antihydral. It looks like a game changer based on everything I’ve read, but I keep seeing mixed opinions about the formaldehyde concern.

I’ve done some research and found that the amount of formaldehyde released topically is very small, no clinical cases have ever linked topical use to cancer, and people have been using it for 10 to 15 years with no issues reported.

But before I start I’m curious. For those of you who have been using it long term (3+ years), have you experienced any health issues you think might be related? And do you feel comfortable continuing to use it indefinitely?

Not looking to fear-monger, just want honest experiences from long term users. Thanks 🙏

Do any of these work?

I so badly want to wear some cute heels like this. Or sandals. Or Idk. Something that doesn't require full cotton socks.

Anyone have any luck with any of these inserts? I'm open to other suggestions.

I normally have to wear my trusty white hanes cotton socks, otherwise I start sweating profusely. And not just from my feet. No, it sends my body into full blown sweat-fest if I don't wear socks (like I can't control my body temperature). Unless I'm freezing cold (and sometimes even then). My HH is worst on my hands, and I know this sounds dramatic, but seriously, if I don't have my socks, I'm absolutely miserable.

I have a nice date with a really wonderful (new) man planned mid-ish summer. Something that calls for nice heels. And I'm sick of wearing boots every season.

Embarrassing moment

I’m looking for a new job and my friend suggests me to his boss to work at this family owned restaurant to be a waiter. I get an interview scheduled and I’m excited for a new job that pays better than my old one and get to work with my friend. I walk in and it’s hot asf and I began sweating my ass off. During the interview I was answering questions fine, but was insanely sweaty, especially my face and hands due to it being so hot in there and me being nervous. I don’t know if the owner interviewing me noticed or if I was just paranoid. The owner wanted me to start training literally a few days later but I didn’t wanna be that guy who’s sweaty hands accidentally drops something or makes your food nasty, so I went home and texted the owner explaining my condition, which I genuinely hate doing because people never understand, and said how I wouldn’t be fit for the job, but she later responded basically saying okay. I don’t know if people have had similar experiences to where they were excited to do something new, but couldn’t because of HH. Just curious!
