I need advice from someone who understands Malawi family/child custody laws.

I am a 24-year-old father in Malawi. I have a young son who is about 17 months old. His mother and I were together when she became pregnant, but our families later had serious disagreements and our mothers stopped communicating well. Because of the family conflict, the mother of my son stopped communicating with me and I was eventually blocked.
I have never wanted to abandon my son. My mother has also provided some support when the child needed things, although we are not financially well-off.
Now I want to be involved in my son's life, communicate with his mother about him, support him, and eventually have regular contact with him. If possible in the future, I would also like to understand whether I can apply for custody or have my son stay with me.
My question is: What does Malawian law say about a father's rights and responsibilities toward his child in a situation like this? Where should I go first—Social Welfare, court, or somewhere else? And what is the proper process for getting access to my child or applying for custody?
Please don't judge the family situation. I'm mainly looking for advice from people who understand the law or have experienced something similar in Malawi. Thank you.
